All talented players. Tough choice for me, interesting to see some of the PA member's choices.

Wow, you stumped me.  I can't pick between JC and TS.

He is from Alabama after all.....just kidding......
Truth be told, I really haven't studied who takes what solo in a song, but JC kicks ass on the first 5 for sure, then usually TS, but JY is the hyperactive rocker infusing the real 'party' element to the music. Love Shaw's solo in Don't Let It End. They all play what's right for the song.
The dynamic rhythmic duo of the Panozzos, are spot-on with very little, if any, showboating. Chuck's jumpy and energetic lines in You Need Love are pretty awesome.
Now, back to the guitar........

I don't want it to look like I jumped on the winning team late in the game but I voted for Tommy Shaw.
I like JY a lot but Shaw plays lead on some of my favorite songs.

I could vote for the one who pulled the most chicks, but I really have to have a Styx-fest and carefully decide. I need to watch more performances too.
These guys are at the top when it comes to artsy AOR (oh, and Jefferson Starship when it comes to ballsy AOR !!)......

I've thought about this for a couple of days but I just can't vote against Tommy Shaw.

Oh, alright, I'll give it to Shaw for his plucky spirit and nice disposition.

Somehow I knew TS would be in the lead. JC didn't hang around long enough to weave his magic, and JY was more for the rhythm. I won't vote until my listening/watching session.
Thanks to all who take the time to read this thread and vote.

Tough choice, JY was more entertaining live to me, but I guess I will give the nod the Shaw.

Right - I've been listening to my Styx albums with intent, I'm casting my vote to JY - he is the more 'Rock' oriented of the bunch, but he kicks severe ass. And the tune 'Snowblind' knocks my shoes off. And his vocal on Jonas Psalter.
Totally lovin' Styx at the moment. My pick of the bunch (along with Jefferson Starship) when it comes to all these excellent, musicianly AOR bands (Journey, Toto, Boston, REO, Foreigner etc.) - must ultimately be DeYoung's top-notch keyboard chops, but the whole bunch are an incredible unit. Even Chuck & John.
These Panozzo twins work for Styx in the same way Mason/Waters work for Floyd. Just perfect.

My personal favorite is actually JC, he's probably one of my favorite prog guitarists of all time. I love the solos/riffs of songs like 'Quick is the Beat of My Heart' and 'Best Thing'. Also, he's a talented songwriter with the  stellar 'A Day'.

Styx blew my mind when I saw them live with Yes. I saw them again the same year, and not Yes. Shaw is impressive, as he has not seemed to aged at all, and he plays a mean solo. JY on the other hand seemed to look like what you'd expect from a late middle aged rock star, also great in his own right, but my vote goes the the former. On a side prog note; the guitar riff in Miss America is admittedly (by JY) inspired from Tulls Minstrel in the Gallery.

^. I never noticed the Tull influence in Miss America. Thanks for pointing it out.

Bump......
Just listened again to the live Styx album 'Caught In The Act'.......
Really memorable performances.
They promo'd the album with an uber-cheezy studio song called Music Time........
.........where in the lyric DeYoung states. " I like big things, I don't care of the quality "........
Time to call it a day, boys...........
Love the album though. And yeah, TS is the star guitarist overall, though JY is awesome.
Still have Jonas Psalter spinning in my head whenever I think of Styx........
