Ha - what's this? Easy: not every album of every band that I get in my paws is included in the monstrously big database called of ProgArchives.com. Some will be, at some point, others will probably not.

I've been teasing the teams a little bit about this, but not too much, because after almost 10 years - of which 4 as a member of the admin team - I am very much aware that there is so much to be added that the teams have a hard time to keep up.

In order to let these bands not go unnoticed, I publish my reviews of their efforts on http://www.hulshout.nl/rfm" rel="nofollow - my own blog - and some of them also end up on http://www.backgroundmagazine.nl" rel="nofollow - Background Magazine  and http://www.progplanet.com" rel="nofollow - ProgPlanet .

To make sure that they don't get lost to ProgArchives members (I have no illusion that all of you go to my web site or Background Magazine every day), I will post them here as well. That way, they are visible to the PA community, and once (or if) the band and album in question get added, I'll simply submit the review and mention that with the post here.

First up: Fossil Evolution - World in Motion ('eventually' added in CrossOver, on 24.12.2014)

Belgian band Isopoda was also referred to as ‘the Belgian Genesis’ in the 1970s, and has long since disappeared from view. However, former singer and bass player Arnold de Schepper is still very much alive and kicking, and tries to bring the remains of Isopoda back to live, by means of Fossil Evolution, a band in which he plays together with his three sons and one of their friends.

Their debut album World in Motion was released in October of this year, and contains some great music, that does require a attentative listen to be appreciated fully.

Cool idea, I will be following this. I think it's sad that some seventies bands who should be on this site won't be because they've never had a digital release, only vinyl and thus the collabs can't get a chance to hear it.

Thanks John. Next week I'll be posting reviews here for Progeland, Murky Red and Aldo Pinelli. More suggestions are welcome, both new and old. A lot of stuff that was released on vinyl can be found online (although not everything), digitized in one form or another.

Progeland - Gate to Fulfilled Fantasies (rejected for ProgArchives, but the little boy on the cover was the inspiration for calling this thread Angelo's Orphanage).

"As we approach the gates, the trumpets sound. The gates open, and
A New Era is about to begin, as we enter Progeland." That's the idea I get when I hear the opening track of the album Gate to Fulfilled Fantasies by the Finnish band Progeland - brainchild of bass player Perry Lindström, who also released albums with Corvus Stone and Voice of the Enslaved this year. On this album, for which he wrote all the music, Lindström is accompanied by Tomi Murtomäki (vocals and all lyrics), Juha Kaski (keyboards), Matias Kangasniemi (guitars) and Pasi Manninen (drums). The aforementioned gates are visible on the beautiful album cover - Sonia Mota took care of all the artwork.   http://www.hulshout.nl/rfm/2014/12/28/open-the-gates-progeland-gate-to-fulfilled-fantasies/" rel="nofollow - Read more...

Nice to see the CORVUS STONE connections here Angelo. There seems to be mixed reactions to this one which is the way I felt from the Youtube vids, until I saw the live clip for the song Starlight which was great by the way.

Thanks John. The Corvus Stone connections are obvious, with Petri Lindström being the band leader and Sonia Mota doing the art work. Reactions are mixed indeed, but I see it the way I wrote it in the review - opinions differ.
Next up is one that is not related to Corvus Stone at all - Marco Ragni.
Murky Red and Aldo Pinelli will follow (although I have doubts about the latter, because apart from one track the album has little to do with progressive rock).

Marco Ragni - Mother from the Sun (being considered by Psychedelic/Space Rock team)
What happens if you take the best things of almost 50 years of psychedelic music and space rock, a bit of jazz rock and add a bit of 21st century technology and composition techniques? Depending on who you are, it could go two ways: either it becomes a mess or you end up with something bordering brilliance. If you are  http://mrrmusic.com/marco-ragni/" rel="nofollow - Marco Ragni , you end up with an album called  http://mrrmusic.com/album/mother-from-the-sun/" rel="nofollow - , that easily fits the second way.   http://www.hulshout.nl/rfm/?p=7722" rel="nofollow - Read more...

Murky Red - Time Doesn't Matter
Belgium is just across the border from where I live. Belgium is also the country where Pink Floyd, Gary Moore, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, The Doors and Lynyrd Skynyrd live. They all live in the house of Stef and Yolanda Flaming, and the houses of their band members in  http://www.murkyred.com/" rel="nofollow - . Actually, in the dark 1960’s and 1970’s I suspect various members of aforementioned bands got together in some weird orgy that led to the procreation of Stef, Yolanda and their fellow band members Patrick Dujardin, Luk Lantin, Rene Marteaux and Marie Vancamp. There is no other way to explain the influences of all these bands in the music of Murky Red. http://www.hulshout.nl/rfm/2015/01/04/want-to-hire-some-boots-murky-red-time-doesnt-matter/" rel="nofollow -

Andy Jackson - Signal to Noise.
Around the time I was 8 years old,  http://andyjacksonmusic.com/" rel="nofollow - -  Jackson  became the sound engineer on the  http://www.pinkfloyd.com/" rel="nofollow - Pink Floyd  movie The Wall. Since then he has worked as sound engineer with Pink Floyd. Based on his experience there, he also got involved with  http://www.davidgilmour.com/" rel="nofollow - David Gilmour ,  http://www.boomtownrats.co.uk/" rel="nofollow - Boomtown Rats , and also  http://www.fields-of-the-nephilim.com/" rel="nofollow - Fields of the Nephilim .

Andy can do more, however - he plays guitar and he sings. He has played with The Eden House, a band led by former Fields of the Nephilim bass player Tony Pettitt. After this, he recorded his solo album Signal to Noise. On this album, he plays,  and of course no one but he was also behind  the controls during recording, mixing and mastering. ON THIS VALETINE’S DAY:

IT’S TIME TO SHINE A LIGHT ON THE LITTLE ONES IN THE SHADOW.

The big ones were small too, once. Drawing by Sonia Mota – click for high larger version.

The past 3-4 months I’ve picked up on reviewing progressive rock albums, something I did a couple of times (say 50-60) before for ProgArchives.com over the last 10 years. The number of reviews is around 1-2 per week right now, and between the promo’s I receive, I find many bands that are just starting or otherwise operating in the shadows of the aforementioned giants.

In our commercially operating world, these aspiring new bands get very little attention – standing in the shadow of the big ones. Yet they deserve it, and they have to, because the giants were small too, once – as shown in the cartoon above this article (courtesy of Sonia Mota – thank you very much!).

Album review: Tony Patterson & Brendan Eyre - Northlands
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Tony-Patterson-Brendan-Eyre" rel="nofollow - Tony Patterson and Brendan Eyre  were both born in North East England, and both have a broad musical background. In 2012, they released an album  http://www.cherryred.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=4905" rel="nofollow - , which was so well received it won them the Best Newcomer award at the 2012 Classic Rock Society Awards.

After this, they started thinking about a concept album describing their beloved North East England, which resulted in  http://www.northlands-music.co.uk/" rel="nofollow - , an album that tells the tale of someone returning to the North East after so many years. The memories, good and bad, the beauty of the landscape and the unfinished business of the character are the drivers for the music. Without a story line to follow, and an album that is largely instrumental, it is hard to tell what the this character experiences exactly along the way. However, the music invites to sit back, relax and let your own version of the story unfold in your mind. [ http://wp.me/p5yXIw-25j" rel="nofollow - ]

This Raging Silence - Isotopes and Endoscopes

When I see words like isotope and endoscope combined in an album title, I get curious to their background. Certainly in this case, because isotopes and endoscopes play a role in an industry where I worked for a number of years: healthcare, and more specifically oncology equipment. Alas, the title has nothing to do with that, all I could find was that it sounded like a good title for an album, in this case the album Isotopes and Endscopes (sic) by  http://www.thisragingsilence.com" rel="nofollow - , a quartet hailing from Bristol, UK.

(Note: After publishing this review, Jeff told me the title relates to his personal experiences in the year2014 -AH)

The album has been in the making for a while now, and if all goes well it will be released shortly after this review appears, in April 2015. The band was formed by Jeff Cox (guitar, vocals) and John Tyrer (electric and acoustic guitar), who were quickly joined by Dave Appleford on bass and Garry Davies on drums. Karibow - Addicted

A perfect candidate for Angelo's Rock Orphanage. That is what Oliver Rüsing delivered under the name Karibow on the album Addicted. There is a tendency amongst progressive (or symphonic) rock fans to dismiss everything that is 'not prog enough'. As such, the band is missing amongst the list of bands and albums on many prog web sites, despite their bio states that they are influenced by (next to pop) rock and (neo)progressive rock, and they got the German Rock & Pop Award for Best Progressive Band in 2014. Exactly the type of band that led me to come up with the name Rock Orphanage[ http://www.hulshout.nl/rfm/2015/04/09/karibow-addicted-album-review/" rel="nofollow - Read more here.... ]

"Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin... This is a cautionary tale, and it concerns a man, a gifted man, living on an island made out of musical instruments...."

That could be the beginning of an album review for  http://www.tigermothtales.com" rel="nofollow - Tiger Moth Tales ' album  https://tigermothtales.bandcamp.com/releases" rel="nofollow - Cocoon , crafter by multi-instrumentalist  https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000539167574&fref=ts" rel="nofollow - Peter Jones . To be honest, it is the beginning of such a review now. As I write this review, I have heard the album quite a few times, but during the final listen before writing this, the hairs on my arms still stood upright during the closing track. Once upon a time, there was a man called Kristoffer Gildenlöw, a musician. This man Kristoffer got caught by the cuteness of baby elephants, which is perfectly understandable if you know how cute these can be. He also noticed that baby elephants and their cuteness may not be available to future generations, if we continue to allow their habitat to be destroyed and their parents being hunted down and shot just for the ivory of their tusks.

That is why in December 2014, Kristoffer and some of his friends and partners organised a campaign to raise money the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. The campaign raised €3000, to be spent on care for orphaned. In a way it was and you are right, indeed. From unsigned (which 6 years later is a far less relevant concept) to the Rock Orphanage was not an illogical step. Thanks for sending some more pictures, I'll add those in the blog entry - and (just) maybe I'll be able to add a picture of that notebook. Transport Aerian - Darkblue

When I was in high school, I always looked at the aspiring musicians in my school (some got quite far with their aspirations too) as if they were some sort of mystics. They always had this sense of being untouchable, impossible to understand around them. That feeling disappeared over time, as I kept in touch with some of them, and it turned out that they were just moving into the same musical areas where I ended up (albeit I started as a listener and became a player only much later). Moonburn - Null Abstract
Moonburn are an Indian band, which just released their debut EP, entitled Null Abstract. The EP consists of 5 tracks, four of which have a length of around 6 minutes, the last one (the title track) being a little bit shorter.

All tracks are build around a guitar tune, and keyboards and the rest of the instruments merge around that. The songs all have something of repetitive theme in them in the vocal parts, which makes them a little boring, and an instrumental midsection in which especially the skills of the guitarists shows through.  The lead vocals are a bit similar on all tracks, and seem to lack bit of emotion, which is only partly compensated by the well performed backing vocals. As of August 5th, I'll be running a monthly playlist on ISKC Rock Radio - every first Wednesday of the month, at 21:00 CET.

Here I will mix the bands found on my web site with my personal all time prog favourites.

Nth Ascension - Ascension of Kings
When a title like Ascenscion of Kings comes by, it is tempting to associate it with Lord of the Rings. Which would be fine, if we hadn't been swamped in LotR for seven years. And luckily, the album of this title, by British Nth Ascenscion has nothing to do with it. Instead, there seem to be two stories about kings mixed in with the other tracks - one of them (Clanaan Pt1 - Pt3) in the form of a longer story that will continue on future albums.

The opening track Fourth Kingdom may give a wrong impression on first listen. It opens with a hard rock guitar and growling bass, suggesting that this is a heavy rock album. However, once the melodic keyboards come in things change and [ http://www.hulshout.nl/rfm/2015/08/07/nth-ascenscion-ascension-of-kings/" rel="nofollow - Read more ....]

Echolyn I heard you listening

I intended to wait with this review until the vinyl was out, but that would take too long now that it's postponed (although only by a week) - the world needs to know all there is to know about this album, now. If only because I just started a new love affair - with Echolyn.

http://www.angelosrockorphanage.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Echolyn-Cover.jpg" rel="nofollow">Echolyn Cover

Echolyn have been around for over 25 years if we count from their founding in 1989. The current line up has only been in effect since 2003 when bass player Tom Hyatt formally joined the band, joining the other members who had been there from the start. Now 25 years together, with only the bass player replaced has made Echolyn a stable force when it comes to composing their music. http://www.angelosrockorphanage.com/2015/09/01/echolyn-i-heard-you-listening/" rel="nofollow - Full review here...

Angelo's Rock Orphanage on ISKC Rock and Web Radio

Although I started carefully, by offering to do this once a month, I quickly changed my mind. From this week onward, I will provide a weekly playlist to ISKC Rock Radio, which will be played on Wednesday evening between 9PM and 11PM.

The playlists will sometimes deviate from the ISKC standard, in the sense that I record interviews with artists every once in a while, and these will be aired as part of the playlist sequence as well when appropriate. Keep an eye out for those, if all goes well we'll be featuring a  http://www.silhouetteband.com" rel="nofollow - Silhouette  interview next week and one with  http://www.kristoffergildenlöw.com" rel="nofollow - Kristoffer Gildenlöw  the week after.

Over the past 9 months, I wrote quite a few reviews and had many discussion with people about music. One topic that keeps coming back is the role of vocals. They have mixed role - both telling the story through lyrics, and adding something musical by their melody. However, when they're absent, music can still tell stories, which is what Estonian guitarist  http://www.kallevilpuu.com/" rel="nofollow - Kalle Vilpuu  proves on his album  http://www.kallevilpuu.com/album-2/" rel="nofollow - Silver Linings . There are a few voices to be heard on this album, but only to support the music, where needed, without lyrics. Science fiction, something I like a lot when I was a teenager, and that can still get my attention when I run into a good movie or book. Apparently, I should add music album to that list as well - given this new release by  http://www.gekkoprojekt.com" rel="nofollow - Gekko Projekt .

With  http://melodicrevolutionrecords.com/album/reya-of-titan" rel="nofollow - Reya of Titan  they have released a concept album that tells the story of Reya, a space miner who ends up becoming the queen of Saturn's moon Titan. The lyrics tell the story, not just the facts but also the emotions, and the music adds to that. Did I just define again what a concept album is...? On ratings for reviews

A few months ago, I thought it was a good idea to add some ratings to my reviews, in order to give people a feel for what to expect without having to read the full review. That felt paradoxal, because on one end I write the reviews, and at the same time I devised a way for people not having to read them. Yet, I did include the ratings for some reviews.

Looking at ratings as such, I've always had mixed feelings about them, mainly because of the way they are interpreted. [ http://www.angelosrockorphanage.com/2015/09/18/on-ratings-and-reviews/" rel="nofollow - full article here ]

Today I had a discussion with a friend on how people listen to music. There's a lot of rock and metal music being released under the moniker 'progressive'. Regardless of how fitting that moniker is (complexity and experimentation does not always mean that the music is 'progressing', pushing forward the boundaries of music), it's a fact that a lot of this music is not something you grab on first listen. It takes at least a bit of time and effort to get into it, to give it proper listen and let it sink in. This is no different with the album  http://mrrmusic.com/album/all-is-not-for-all/" rel="nofollow - All is not for All , released a few months ago by  http://www.anuryzm.com" rel="nofollow - Anuryzm , a metal outfit hailing from the United Arab Emirates. Murky Red - No Pocus without Hocus

Sometimes, it's hard to get into an album - as a listener, or as a reviewer. And in other cases, it just happens naturally. The latter is the case with Murky Red's new album  http://melodicrevolutionrecords.com/album/no-pocus-without-hocus" rel="nofollow - No Pocus without Hocus , and album that I could listen to since 4 weeks before the official release.

Album cover - click for hi-res image

With this album, it is clear that  http://www.murkyred.com" rel="nofollow - Murky Red  have grown since their debut - or maybe they just stopped being shy and are no longer holding back on what they have been wanting to play all the time. Of course, they still mix rock and blues, more elements have been added now. Heavy guitar riffs, mixed with melodic guitar solos, a well educated organ, and some nicely mixed in percussion are used to build rock walls, which are interleaved with psychedelic sound trips (no, not soundscapes), surrounding the hypnotising voice of Stef Flaming.

I've been quiet for a little bit as far as my blog was concerned. Four new posts (3 reviews) today though...

After a short break - on to 2016

Today I realised it's been over a month since I posted anything here, and the last post wasn't even a review. I have been reviewing, for other sites, and I've been busy with other music related activities (more on that in future posts). This year, 2015, was a bit of a special year for me, in many ways.

Seconds before Landing - II

Composer, singer, drummer and midi player, that is the description John Crispino's name has on the album IIthe second release of his personal project Seconds before Landing. On the album he gets the assistance of Steve Schuffert on guitars, JD Garrison on bass, Jamie Peck on piano, saxophone and fluteand Maurice Witkowski on acoustic guitar.

IZZ - Everlasting Instant

IZZ have been around since the 90s, and were founded by American brothers  Tom (keyboards, vocals) and John (bass, guitar, keyboards, vocals) Galgano. Over time, the band became known for incorporating different styles into their music, and for combining four vocals: the two brothers, and female vocalists Laura Meade and Anmarie Byrnes). They've been getting more attention since their fourth album My River Flows (2005), and released their seventh, Everlasting Instant in 2015.

For me, this album was the first I heard of IZZ, another band I had heard about but never got around to listening until this year. [ http://www.angelosrockorphanage.com/2015/12/06/izz-everlasting-instant/" rel="nofollow - Full 740 words ]

Il Ballo Della Castagne - Live Studio

The Austrian (and according to some Italian) band Il Ballo Della Castagne is the brain child of singer Vinz Aquarian and guitars/keyboard player Marco Gargegnani. They founded the band in 2007 and released four studio albums since then. The album under review here, Live Studio, is the fifth, and was recorded live (in band setting) in the Nadir studio in Genua, Italy.

http://www.angelosrockorphanage.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/ilballo.jpg" rel="nofollow">ilballo

Il Ballo Della Cassagne is considered part of the Rock Progressivo Italiano (RPI) movement within progressive rock, but is more fittingly described as Dark Italian Prog. Unlike most RPI bands, they don't copy the sound of the progressive rock acts that Italy brougth forth in the 1970s (PFM, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Le Orme, Museo Rosenbach), but rather create their own mix [ http://www.angelosrockorphanage.com/2015/12/06/il-ballo-della-castagne-live-studio/" rel="nofollow - Full 376 words ]

David Bowie - Blackstar
When I ordered David Bowie's Blackstar at the end of 2015, I was excited - looking forward to reviewing the album, as my first review of 2016. I was never a big fan of Bowie, until just over a year ago, and it was magical to discover his first 14 albums while getting the announcements of a new album that was 'going to be different than anything he'd done before'. The video for the title track, and the audio track for Lazarus, which only got video added the day before the album was released, certainly showed that Bowie was up to something very new. Electronic music, with a jazzy, avant garde feel to it, and weird images of a blind folded Bowie in the video - indeed things he had never done before.

So bad... I didn't keep this up to date. But the blog is not dead, nor is the radio show...

Colin Tench Project - Hair in a G-String

Classically trained (but not in guitar) guitarist Colin Tench is about 132 years old now. He was there when George Martin was conceived, errm, conceived The Beatles... Having learned to play the instrument at 22, after a 110 years he can barely be distinguished from the ones who started at age 5. This is the point where I could say 'All jokes aside' and continue, but with this album I'm afraid that's very hard, as there is a lot to laugh about, in between 80 minutes of seriously good and well performed music.
