Hello you all!

I am brazilian, and you may (or may not) know that Brazil is a large country with many cultural differences, that apply on music as well. Each region, or maybe each state, of this country has its own styles of music, that may sound very different than the other ones. And for each of this subcultural genres, that are many variations of the musical styles played by the people. (And I think this may occur in many, if not all, countries around the world.)

My point is, I was listening to some music called "Gaúcha*", which is an umbrella term used to classify a large set of musical styles (Milonga, Chamamé, Vaneira, etc) that are played in the south states of Brazil, and also in some neighbor countries like Argentina and Uruguay. And this kind of music usually has some "mainstream" artists, who play music more targeted to dancing parties and events, and there's also some bands and artists that push the boundaries a little further, making more elaborated lyrics and melodies, sometimes taking usage of odd time signatures and breakdowns, and that aren't appreciated by the same group of people that the more mainstream ones are (mainly because you can't dance to it).

So, may this style of regional music be considered somewhat progressive? I will post some youtube links, hope you enjoy and share your opinion.

(All musics are NOT ROCK, except when noted)

2 - "Retrato de Pampa e Invernada", by César Oliveira & Rogério Melo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBkEExWAJsU&feature=related
3 - "Da Alma de Dom Emílio" by César Oliveira & Rogério Melo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yD2qQRQVXFU&feature=related
4 - "Quando os Verso vem pras Casa" by Luiz Marenco - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4rLElHqQJY
5 - "Herdeiro da Pampa Pobre", by [Prog] Rock band Engenheiros do Hawaii (cover of Gaúcho da Fronteira) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5gue56zkzA&feature=related

* the therm gaúcha is used because it's made by "gaúchos", the people living in this region.
** don't be sad if you can't understand the lyrics: most people here can't as well. They use some kind of archaic language from the borderlands that, besides being very difficult in portuguese alone, sometimes mixes with spanish too.
