Where do you get your prog?

If you are in the UK, I can recommend a couple of great places to try.  Firstly, try Malcolm Parker at GFT Ltd.  He has his own record label, Cyclops, which is definately worth trying out (get some of his samplers).  He is based in Tolworth, Surrey, and his web site is www.gft-cyclops.co.uk. 

Alternatively, you can try Will at Caerllysi Music in Cardiff, who is the UK's Main distributer for Glass Hammer, Iluvatar, Cyan, Anekdoten and a number of other bands, whose music are therefore the cheapest in UK.  He can be checked out at www.caerllysimusic.co.uk.  Both guys are friendly, knowledgable and provide a top class service. 

The third source I would mention is the Classic Rock Society, based in Rotherham, who put on gigs and have their own shop.  You can catch them on www.classicrocksociety.com. Amazon.Uk  has recently proved a gold mine for a lot of prog, all the 3 CD box sets of prog rock are there cheap. Touch, Khan, East Of Eden albums have recently appeared on Eclectric Records; God Speed You Black Emperor, Mount Zion etc, along with all the recent Cuneiform releases all are available from Amazon.UK.

 

And for the more obscure releases especially by European mainland labels, Leicester-based Ultima Thule record & CD shop, is where I go.

1. Me and my friends, we organise meetings where we listen to each other's new cd's.

2. I'm subscriber to a great Dutch progressive rockmagazine (iO - Pages). I've become very experienced in reading and interpreting reviews

3. There's Amazon too, for lots of soundbites.

4. There's ProgArchives  ! Lots of reviews and many mp3's, showing complete songs! A great help for buying records, I must say.

In Cologne there is Saturn, a record shop where you canget almost anything. they have a huge store. If they just ran out of a record they sell you can order it there. Then there is a good import shop too. If that doesn't help we order the records directly from the homepage of the artists. Also there are severale 2nd hand shops here. And regular 2nd-hand fairs.

i discovered this guy's site, then noticed he lives right near my place...so i ramble on over for a visit and was totally blown away by his inventory of progressive music which he keeps in his home basement "store" ...

literally thousands upon thousands of cd's (and dvd's too) of extremely rare and hard-to-find stuff. and all of it is exclusively progressive rock music... nothing else ...i was amazed and ended up staying there for hours...lost track of time...

he allowed me to open anything i was interested in to have a sample listen before buying...

he also has some personal contacts with several california based prog groups...spock's beard, etc.
and was partially responsible for bringing Änglagård to usa...


if only i had more $ ... hmmm

I know how you feel.    I too am a student without a job.  I live in Canada: where the only big prog act is Rush, and you can't buy their albums anywhere.  I went to my local CD store yesterday, and ask the clerk if the store can order vinyl.  He replied: "What's that?"  The city I live in is becoming more and more populous, but we have no stores.  By that I mean we have one bookstore and one music store in the whole city, repeat: CITY.  Nobody will work in the service industry, because there are three oilsands processing plants here, and everyone works in those.  My mom is afraid of the internet, so Amazon isn't an option.  I can't take it much longer!
