I don`t have any of these MySpace or my this or my that  social networking accounts just an email address and PA account but occasionally go to these things once and a while. For example, right now  I`m listening to some tracks from Where`s The Nine`s MySpace  which was linked here on PA. The thing about these sites is the bloody friends section.  How can these people who have these accounts have a dead friend ? Such as Frank Zappa. Frank is dead ( at least the last time I checked ).

LOL Am I right in thinking you are not a fan of networking sites?

A lot of people on MS are represented by fans, family, fellow musicians etc.

As you point out it would be pretty difficult for Frank to represent himself.

Are you saying that deceased artists should not have any exposure on the net, just because they are dead??

What about their websites? Most have member sections and forums these days.

Personally, I think its a great idea. I have discovered numerous bands through this method.

Each to their own I guess.

Friends reference myspace pages.  There is an official Frank Zappa myspace page, and by clicking on Frank Zappa in friends, it takes you to the page set up for his music/ about him.

Frank Zappa's page has friends too.  "Frank Zappa has 89739 friends." Dweezil Zappa is listed as a friend of Frank Zappa. Think of it as friends of the music rather than particularly friends of the man.  The friends space can be a very good way to find musically related acts (though I like to search by "sounds like" and "influenced by" in the music search page).

But isn't it strange that someone can have Frank Zappa as a friend? Or Zappa's music, as you said. I can be a "friend" of Zappa's music, but how on earth can Zappa's music be a friend of me? What are these "friends" anyway? Confused Dead Thumbs Down

I agree that it is strange. One can be friendly with the music (not hostile to it) and the music can be friendly to you ina sense (does not harm you, but is beneficial) -- rather like ozone-friendly products do not harm the ozone layer, but the ozone and ozone-friendly underarm deodorants are not friends in terms of "knowing each-other").  I feel friendly to Frank, but Frank never had the chance to feel friendly towards me.  The word friend can refer to a helpful thing or quality, and Zappa's music is a friend of mine, but it doesn't consider me a friend even if it is aurally-friendly to me.

I think it rather likely that my drink was spiked (it may have been the Porcupine Tea).

I wish someone would lace my drinks with LSD 25.

Can someone just answer the question. What are these friends? My friends sort of live in houses across town. Some in other towns, cities other countries.I don`t get this. Whenever I go to a MySpace site to listen to such & such`s band and then there`s all these "friends". I was using Zappa as an example just because he happened to be on this particular site.

Sorry, I don't have  myspace page, so I will hardly be the most knowledgeable person on it (I use myspace a huge amount, though), but it seems mostly self-explanatory to me.  I described it as "Friends reference myspace pages" (each friend has a link to his/ her/ a band's myspace page, and so it is in large part promotional).

Regarding the music section (and there's more to myspace than that), i'll sart by using Magma's myspace page as an example:

MAGMA's Friend Space (Top 20)
MAGMA has 12729 friends.
 KRAMUS

 Yoann SERRA

 JANNICK TOP

 ZAB

 Jean-Marc Jafet

 SIMON GOUBERT

 Elull Noomi

 Guapo

 FabFive

 JEAN LOUIS

 Pierre-Michel Sivadier

 Magma Bootlegs

 Rammstein Haus

 le triton

 Orlando Allen

 Marco Tchamp Photographies

 Benoît Alziary

 philippe berecq group

 Le Gré Des Vents officiel

 Zoll

These are people, artists and bands that have associations with Magma, want to be associated with Magma, and it can be for fans.  By becoming a friend, one is also promoting one's own page since each friend's name, and image, is a hyperlink to the friend's myspace page (I often use those links to discover more, and related music).  Often this is done as a tit-for-tat.  If I become your friend, you'll become mine -- thus greater exposure and more hits.  Notice comments such as "Thanks for the add" -- one must request to become another's friend.

Becoming and adding someone as a friend is used to support others and promote one's own interests.

I ask myself the same question... they're probably social misfits who have very few friends in real life, and who cling onto your page for dear life... leaving rude messages occasionally... people like Colt2112 in fact.  I never asked him to be my friend; he just appeared from no-where, and I've not been able to shake him off since.....Embarrassed

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

It's just a word dude. Big smile  The idea is that you go into these things to meet people, and if you find a person or band you find interesting, you send them a request to be your friend.  If they accept, you appear as their "friends" and they as yours, and you have access to certain aspects of each others profile that you otherwise wouldn't.   Of course we're using the word "friends" in very general and broad terms.

Is it just me, or did some of Magma's 'friends' seem a bit 'pretentious'. ZAB seemed cool.
