Topic: "Fear of a Blank Planet" lyrics (Pearl Ja Posted: December 17 2007 at 14:31 |
Hey proggers.
I have a question for your interpretatious minds (or whatever you call it). How would you interpretate the following from Porcupine Tree's "Fear of a Blank Planet" song:
"My friend says he wants to die He's in a band, they sound like Pearl Jam Their clothes are all black The music is crap"
Being a Pearl Jam fan as well, this verse caught my attention but I find it a little hard to make out if they have an opinion about PJ or if it's just a comment on the "friend's" crappy band...
Prog on!

I think it was commentary on how many bands try to emulate Pearl Jam's sound lately, ie Nickelback, Staind, Lifehouse, etc.

I'm a huge Pearl Jam fan, so I hope that it's no crack on the band, but other than that I really don't know.

Yeah, I agree. I don't think Wilson would so openly bash a band in his music. I mean, he takes his work seriously, I don't think controversy was in mind.

He might have taken a page out of rap books. Maybe Pearl Jam will reciprocate with an equally negative comment about Porcupine Tree and there will be a rock turf war.

If it's not, it should be. I find Pearl Jam trite, generic, and mediocre, something that the kids described in the song would like. (Sorry, not a grunge fan at all)

I said the same thing about Radiohead before I actually sat and listened to their albums a few times.

Well, they certainly were a breath of fresh air when their debut came out, but looking at your profile it doesn't seem like you'd remember that year too well.

I love me some Pearl Jam (see my Lastfm), and I didn't take it personally. I agree that's it's probably aimed at the slew of horrible bands that cite PJ as an influence, much to the band's dismay.

I remember in an interview Steven Wilson said that he wasn't purposely
knocking Pearl Jam, instead he was knocking all the kids who play in
bands that just do generic rock. They are merely copying Pearl Jam's
sound, not offering anything new, just plain and boring.

I liked Vitalogy and Ten, but after that it's all grunge/punk/pop crap.
I'm more of a soundgarden guy anyways.

Well Pablo Honey yeah but we don't like talking about that one. And yes I concede it would have been comparatively great in 1991. But Hair Metal makes anything else look good.

Well, whether or not some people like or dislike PJ is not really of my interest. I have a huge respect for PJ; both as a band and as people and I think you should be very careful of judging them before you know them..

This topic, however, was aimed for the quote from the song and thanks for the replies on that. I suppose no-one has a link or anything from this interview that Fight Club mentions (or any other interview where SW mentions PJ)...?
