I wonder if there's any hope for a nation that reacts happily to the death of a dictator by firing weapons into the air. Even in happiness, they can't leave the specter of violence out of it.

I'm affraid so. Just look in this article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6221751.stm.

Someone recorded the whole of the event (probably with his mobile phone) with sound, contrary to the official version. It didn't look like an act of justice but rather like a revenge of Shiites.

but that is their business as far as i'm concerned. you can't say revenge was not the first thing on their minds.

Maybe, but I cant believe that they didnt know this could cause trouble. The article suggests that they all knew that another video was being made so you think they would have roubed a couple of brain cells together and kept quite during his exicution. The result is we will probably see a further rise in sectarian violance.

we are talking about the same groups of folks who kill over a ferry accident, a medieval quote, a dozen silly cartoons or seeing the golden arches out of their apartment windows. i'm quite certain they would find a reason to kill others without saddam having been executed. it would be news if something occurred some place in the world that offended muslims even in a small fashion and nobody got killed as a result. i would not be surprised if a american made car was parked in front of a camel hitching post and it sparked off sectarian violence.

Your going way too far with that but we are talking about officials taunting a condemned man as he's about to be hung and bringing sectarianism into it, that would spark serious animosity in many culures.

i'm not going too far and you either know it and deny it or just fail to realise it at all. that is of no concern to me, however. saddam is dead and it is no loss to me. he was a sadist and a murderer and his soul, if he has one, is spiralling off into hel's domain for all eternity. may he rot in agony as far as i care. he needs the prayers of the better among us for when he crawls before whatever god he prays to with his blood-stained hands. the only good thing saddam did for me was give me a point in the rotten.com deadpool and raise my ranking in that contest.

i'm not insulting anyone. they are expressing their opinions and i am expressing mine. there is nothing in freedom of speech that says someone can voice an opinion without someone else having an opposing opinion. i am noticing this:

1. anti-bush or anti-american opinion=freedom of speech, even if it is calling bush supporters or conservatives illiterate neanderthals or calling americans gun-toting monkeys

2. views aganst #1=insults and attempts to oppress the free speech of others.

Let's all just break it up; Saddam's death clearly freed our world of all evil, Bush's war against Iraq was a great success, and this world now officially only consists of green meadows, fluffy bunnies and cute kitty cats
The scattered jigsaw of my redemption laid out before my eyes
Each piece as amorphous as the other - Each piece in its lack of shape a lie
