Topic: "This Is Our Punk-Rock" Posted: October 04 2006 at 14:29 |
I know there's been quite a number of threads regarding "mood-driving" music, I mean, more like "what is the scariest/sadest/happiest/etc... album you've ever heard?"... I'm not trying to open a new thread, just wanted to express myself about a particular album. I'm not feeling that happy or entusiastic right now...and I was just listening to this album, "This Is Our Punk-Rock, Thee Rusted Satellites Gather + Sing" by A Silver Mt. Zion... and I can asure you, it totally made me feel like crap. Totally recommend it, it's a very good album.

ELO never fail to put me in a good mood, Deep Purple's driving rhythms with Ian Gillan's cheeky sense of humour cheers me up, the only time i got scared when i heard Madonna recently and thought hmmmmmm....nice!!! Free make me feel a bit sad, especially Remember...the one about summer memories in the northern heat...the Battle of Evermore....and songs associated with old times and lost friends....

A Silver Mt. Zion and Godspeed You Black Emperor are very good at making me miserable, which is why I don't listen to them much. When listening to post-rock I prefer something less depressing like Yndi Haldi, which is very beautifull and at times uplifting.

I find "This is Our Punk-Rock" to be a more uplifting album than some of ASMZ's other works, but maybe that's just me. I mean, I interpret the title to be a call for all the alienated beings of society to band together and sing their own unifying songs... I find that to be an uplifting concept, myself.

This Is Our Punk-Rock, Thee Rusted Satellites Gather+Sing is probably my least favourite Silver Mt. Zion album, though very consistent and with the touch that you don't often receive. Good album, but limited pleasure.

I can see how an album like The Wall could easily wreak havoc on one's emotions.

Definitely not the best ASMZ album, but as I was discussing with a friend earlier today, there's no (good) song that can cast you into the depths of despair quite like 'Dead Flag Blues' by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. As far as the opposite end of the spectrum, I usually experience more positive emotions when listening to Explosions in the Sky or Sigur Ros. And you can't help but be happy when listening to Dragonforce .

I actually started to appreciate this album not so long ago. The lyrics alone can make you feel like that. I remember listening to Babylon was built on fire and American motor on smoldered field and actually imagening all of those lyrics... I'll try and never do that again since I had a very disturbing nightmare that night.

I vote Post-Rock is the best for any emotion. It is the most emotional genre, so what ever genre the band wants you to be in, it will put you there.
I LOVE IT

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

Definitely not their best. Depressing yes, but Born into Trouble... and He Has Left Us Alone... are much better.
A Silver Mt. Zion are depressing, but they can't top Godspeed. I agree with GoldenSpiral, definitely check out Dead Flag Blues.
