Topic: Another newbie introduces herself. Posted: September 06 2006 at 08:01 |
Greetings from Ohio. It seems that this is the place to be to discover
interesting and innovative music--Prog Archives, I mean, certainly not
Ohio.
I've listened to a good deal of progressive rock.
Admittedly, much has failed to captivate me, some of it quite highly
acclaimed. On the other hand, many of my favorite bands are prog: Pink
Floyd, King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator, Porcupine Tree,
Marillion, Pain of Salvation, and Ayreon, amongst others.
Now,
one thing that struck me upon browsing the Prog Archives was this
inclusion of a number of artists that I enjoy but had not known to be
typically regarded as "prog"--such as the Legendary Pink Dots (probably
my favorite band altogether), Radiohead, Ulver, Godspeed You Black
Emperor, Brian Eno, Lacrimosa, Tangerine Dream, Muse, Mercury Rev, Mike Patton
stuff (ehm, I love *some* of it), and, let's not forget, Sleepytime
Gorilla Museum. All that's missing is Einsturzende Neubauten, Coil, and Robert Rich.
I keep reminding myself that my media storage is nearing capacity and
that instead of buying so many CD's I should...erm, invest in CD's?
Nonetheless, here I am...

Welcome, you will find a wide variety of bands on this site, some of which have caused much debate about their "progginess". I won't mention any names.

Hi, chopper. I certainly like having more variety than less...even when
the progginess is suspect...even if that must encompass Queen...

Welcome! You certainly have interests in a wide variety of prog. I look forward to having you join in on the discussions. It is also great to have another woman here. They are in small numbers here, but not for lack of wanting more women around.
I understand what you mean about living in Ohio. Michigan is not all that different. I came to this site for the same reasons.
Have fun!

A very warm welcome from a fellow woman (not from Ohio, but from the Eternal City of Rome...) - the dreaded Ghost Rider aka Raffaella, scourge of all Dream Theater fans, not to mention notorious closer of inappropriate threads!

Welcome! I'm from Akron. I'm in Atlanta right now for grad school, but I know what you mean about the prog scene. It's pretty weak everywhere in the US (not just Ohio). Good taste in music by the way.

Salve, Ghost Rider; puellae regunt! (Sorry, I don't know modern Italian. )
Hi, SolariS! Yeah, I guess we shouldn't expect anything "progressive"
to take hold in the US...except maybe Progressive Auto Insurance.

Salutations, stonebeard, GoldenSpiral, and Geck0!
Too busy to do much foruming lately, but I've been perusing the
ProgArchives. One discovery arrived yesterday...In the Woods'
Omnio--and, oh my god, I love it!! (The new Wolverine CD was also in
the mail, also excellent. It was good day.) And I had to order Archive
this morning after coming across the "Again" mp3 here.
Ah, so much music to explore...
