Anyone going to buy it? They are a little prog, but not exactly what I would call a prog band. Anyway, the new tracks sound really good.

If you're interested, they posted two tracks off of the album on their myspace:

It seems like they are getting even more instrumental. The release is scheduled for 9/12. If you're not a fan of HEAVY music, you may not like this......lol

Oh yeah, the first two tracks are the new ones.

I saw them live at the Lowlands festival a few days ago. Not bad, but not very impressive either. Opeth were much better. So I won't buy this album.

Well...let's be honest. How many bands can stack up to Opeth?

I don't think Mastodon is really trying to do the same thing as opeth either.

I was just comparing them to another metal band, that's all... of course they play a different kind of metal. I just meant to say that I wasn't impressed by Mastodon's performance at all, and that there are much better (progressive) metal bands out there.

Don't get me wrong, I totally agree with you. There are better metal bands out there. But you could make that argument for every single metal band on earth that isn't the one that you like the best.

I was just trying to point out that bands like Opeth write their music for a different purpose than Mastodon, so it's not really fair to compare the two. While Opeth seems very concerned with the artistic and lyrical quality of the music, Mastodon is a very over-the-top, fast riffing, tempo changing agressive metal band. I love Opeth to death (no pun intended), but sometimes I'm in the mood for something like Mastodon.

You posted this in the wrong section, as Mastodon are not listed in the archives. I agree with them being worthy of being included here though.

I don't believe in unfair comparisons. Wink

But, have it as you like: on its own (not compared to Opeth), the concert was alright, but not very convincing.

Saw them some time(years) ago in Tilburg while supporting High On Fire and they were good. Very good. Nice dudes also. But even if they weren't nice dudes I will get the new album anyway. Great band.
