A recent discussion about Coheed and Cambria got me thinking - is there
validity in creating a category called "Alternative Prog"? (not the
best title, but it's all I could think of for now)
This would consist of bands may not have taken the traditional route of being influenced by 70s prog bands (although some of them might be), but whose music has developed out of alternative/modern rock. Examples of bands already here who would fall in this category would be the Mars Volta and Radiohead. There are bands who could be considered for inclusion in this category - Coheed and Cambria, Muse, Fall of Troy and maybe even System of a Down. Before anyone gets started - this is not an attempt at trying to validate bands by labelling them as prog. These are bands who are not prog if you were to compare them with Genesis or Yes, but are prog if you compare them with their contempories. What I do have reservations about is if there are enough bands to warrant the creation of this category. There's no point in creating a category for just 2 or 3 bands, and I don't believe that bands should be added just for the sake of increasing the numbers. So those are my thoughts - what do you think? |

^ That's not the point I'm trying to make. I'm asking if the creation of the category should be considered.

I don't think poll results tell you that much, and I'm more interested in discussion about it. You've said no. Care to exand on that? |

I've read much about Coheed and Cambria in different print magazines, and I like how the Eclipsed magazine labels them: Avantgarde Rock. I've also seen that name being applied to lots of new generation Alternative/Emo Rock bands which have a more artistic approach than the usual bands. The problem is that people new to the 70s categories might confuse it with Art Rock - but we could explain that in the genre definition.

The other problem is that we already have the RIO/Avant category, which could cause confusion, as Coheed and Cambria sound nothing like those bands. |
