Karat is one of the most famous 70's and 80's DDR groups.  Formed in 1975, the band has had a few lineup changes throughout their whole career.  The most famous lineup consists of Henning Protzmann (founding member: bass), who left the group in 1986, Herbert Dreilich (founding member: lead vocals and occasional rhythm guitar), whose son took over after his death in 2004, Michael Schwandt (drums), who joined in 1976 and stayed with the band until 2022, Bernd Römer (lead guitar) who joined in 1976 and is still with the group today, and Ulrich "Ed" Swillms (founding member: keyboards) who left the group in 1987.  One of the most notable members of the group was Thomas Kurzhals from Stern Combo Meissen, who was in the band from 1984 to 1992.  

Though their music would generally be considered strictly contemporary pop rock, I personally consider their early music to be somewhat proggy, in particular the music on their second album "Über sieben Brücken musst du gehn" (You must go through seven bridges).

I have a weak spot for some DDR rock; I was following their scene through DDR radio already around 1980 when very few of my fellow West Germans knew it (although Karat had a hit single in the West already in the seventies).
 
Albatros is a stunning piece and they have a few further good songs, but I wouldn't think of them as prog. Most of their music is pretty easy listening melodic rock. They have no full album that qualifies as prog, arguably not even a half of any album. They took up the occasional prog influence but hardly any band in the seventies didn't do that.
