Tangerine Dream Team: Passed and Presence

PAUL FRICK     Paul Frick is the newest addition to the Tangerine Dream line-up, having joined the TD trio in 2020, following the sudden departure of Ulrich Schnauss. Before that, Paul Frick had tried virtually EVERYTHING in the world of music, going from being a guitarist in a heavy metal band to a house music MC, a wannabe rapper, a jazzy keyboard player and a hip hopper to boot, before finally becoming the newest face in the electronic music scene by entering the frenetic pace of life on the road with Tangerine Dream, just before they embarked on their longest world tour in their entire career in 2023. Paul Frick has the notable distinction of being the only member of Tangerine Dream never to have met Edgar Froese.

I'm still not sure he's a good addition. He doesn't stand out. I think he's there to fill the "third person" quota.

Yeah, someone who's come from the world of Rap & Hip Hop is not really the kind of musician you want to fill the "third person" quota in Tangerine Dream, especially if his three lacklustre solo albums are anything to go by. Somehow, I don't think Edgar would approve either. Confused

Tangerine Dream: Passed and Presence

HOSHIKO YAMANE     Konnichiwa! Finishing on a high note, this is the amazing sound of Hoshiko Yamane, a Japanese virtuoso violinist who added another string to her proverbial bow when she joined Tangerine Dream in 2011. Smile

TANGENT DREAMS    Approaching Tangerine Dream from a new angle now, this is the incredible sound of Tangent Dreams, the best Tangerine Dream tribute "band" you're ever likely to hear - although it's really all the work of one James Miller, a multi-instrumentalist and electronic music composer, and following in the tradition of Tangerine Dream, he somehow managed to record and release nine albums in 2019 alone. Smile

^That guy's been accused of helping himself to other users' remixes and branding them as his own work.

Hi,

I kinda think that GERT EMMENS would be the best TD like thing around ... and he has a massive discography and like Edgar Froese, seems to compose everyday and every hour!

I'm not sure about Paul Frick, but not in the way that folks see it here ... the album with him is probably the better one since Edgar Froese left us, in my book ... and sadly, the majority of great things they have (the free form ones with hours of the day and visuals) are not on CD at all, and they are far out, and a lot better than the actual CD releases, for me. I have always liked the "tripping" in TD and letting their music flow ... and since the passing of Edgar, a lot of that "flow" had disappeared and I kinda called it ... a bit too machine like for me ... meaning to mechanical and not a free flow of images ... that all the previous music had ... and it simply shows how Edgar was a visual composer influenced by a lot of literature and other arts ... where as the current TD does not have that inclination at all ...

I sure wish that Jerome would one day wake up ... and become the artist he could be ... it just feels sad that the work he did with his dad, is kinda gone and lost, and it did not mean a whole lot for him, as his own stuff is different ... and nice, but not great in my book.

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
