I agree. All good tracks, but they don't match up to the very best of Duke. Fading Lights, Mama and Domino would probably all be somewhere in my Genesis top 20. Fading Lights in particular really moves me. I love Phil's vocals. |

Absolutely agree with these comments. Fading Lights is a clear contender for “so long and thanks for all the fish” valedictory award.

Dukes pretty good. I could do without some of the middle songs (Heat Haze, Alone Tonight, Cul de Sac), but the rest are great!

I totally agree. That's my logical conclusion too.

Collins drumming is the best of his career , apparently the snare was 'un-snared' to create a sound like hitting packing cases, and it's rather nice!
The 'meat' of the album is easily 5 stars: Behind The Lines (parts one and two) Duchess Guide Vocal Man Of Our Times Turn It On Again Misunderstanding Dukes Travels Dukes End I used to be able program specific tracks on my old Hi-Fi and I always played this. Unfortunately the rest is a bit of a yawn to me and the pre-cursor to Banks incredibly underwhelming solo career. |

I always felt like Duke and ABACAB were super tight, and Collins was working double duty (even though nothing will ever be good enough for some people). I like both the early Prog and later stripped down versions of Genesis. Both have their merits and drawbacks. They are really difficult to compare, so I almost think of them as 2 completely separate bands, much like 70s and 80s Yes, or even 70s versus 80s Rush. Sometimes, you want to sit down and listen to albums that deliver the fury without the fluff. These are good go-to albums for those times. What I find really strange is just how much Collins’ voice sounds like Gabriel’s on these albums. Few bands could lose almost half their musicians and still deliver the goods. I’d say “Enjoy the music. It’s still very interesting. Give ‘em a break!”

Which song are you referring to? I think the snares were on most of the time if not always on Duke. To my ear, the distinct snare sound is more likely to have been a mixing/miking move. |

I agree. I mean, after Abacab Genesis lost it's proginess (apart from a few one-offs like Domino), but the music's still great.
I don't know what Collins does with the snares, but it sounds good. (Though I doubt the extremely battered drum kit would agree!)

I agree that Duke stands up very well after all this time. The story was not as mythic or as poetic as PG-era songs (it's more like a modern story juxtaposed into an "old" time period), but the instrumental flow, compositional integrity, and performances are great. The music always felt a little too compressed to me, even in slow/soft sections there wasn't enough space and definition, but that synth washed sound seemed cool and rich at the time.
OP: Yes.

must admit I am relying on my memory from 40 years ago but I remember reading an interview back then with the band and they talked about the unique drum sound that was created on the album and likening it to hitting packing cases. I seem to remember that part of this was to remove the snare 'effect'. I listening to the album last night and most of the album has this bar maybe one or two tracks. Away from the production , unfortunately Alone Tonight and Please Don't Ask really drag the album the down. Cul-De-Sac and Heathaze are pretty decent but still don't hit the spot for me. The rest is top notch and show the band at the top of it's game imo.

Agree with Alone Tonight, it sounds rather plain to me and lacking character.
Duke is fairly strong overall though. Quite the dynamic album really. Edited by Tom Ozric - July 10 2020 at 03:04 |
