Topic: Kansas appreciation thread Posted: November 07 2016 at 05:59 |
Damn. The new album sounds dull to me and seems like a standard rock album. Lynyrd Skynyrd or Bad Company come to mind.
Nothing progressive about it. Just a lot of riffs and sentimental lyrics and some violin. Rhythm in the Spirit sounds okay, but only because it sounds like Toto or Chicago. Another band that I used to like, but do not like anymore. The two most anticipated albums of 2016 (Kansas and Marillion) really failed to win me over. Does it have anything to do, that both Walsh and Livgren are not involved? Or maybe I just am tired of listening to same guitarriffs for the last 30 or so years. What are your thoughts?

I'm a Kansas fan, but I haven't had a chance to check it out yet. However, I like Lynyrd Skynyrd a lot, and Bad Company have some great tunes. I don't at all dislike "standard rock."

I like standard rock. I like all music. But Kansas had something different to offer, and the new album does not really seem all that different. I must say that Skynyrd really went bad after Edge of Forever, wich wa okay. Bad Company is really great stuff.

Wouldn't it be better to not approach things with preconceptions though? Would you like the new Kansas album more if it were the debut album of some unknown band? Try looking at it that way.

I know what you mean, and I am certainly reviewing things like that. I would go as far and say, that Kansas got to an album because they are famous. I would rather that a young band was given the opportunity to release a debut album, rather than a dinosaur band re-chewing the same old formula.

Listened once last week and I rather enjoyed it, I think there are some very good compositions here. And I do think there are some proggy songs throughout. I don't think there is any Toto or Chicago sounding songs let alone Skynyrd . Steve Walsh is retired and Kerry is super busy with other projects, I would love to see him back in Kansas but I don't think he has time.
I think it is a good album considering the time/age of the remaining members.

I didn't compare it to Skynyrd, I said it sounds mainstream like Skynyrd. Skynyrd used to be an all out boogie band, with grandiose lyrics, really liked them. But they went so bland the last 20 years. That's what this new Kansas album does to me.
Freaks of Nature was a special kind of album, with more aggression and sonically interesting. The new album to me, failes to deliver.

I really like the new album...so I guess it is just one of those agree to disagree things.

I guess I wonder why start an "Appreciation Thread" with a negative posting?

There was no Kansas thread, so I started one, to keep thing organized. And besides, am I not entitled to my own opinion?
I APPRECIATE Kansas for what they did. I like the more poprock albums with Elefante, I liked the hillbilly prog they did in the seventies, I liked the heavy metal songs they put out. I liked the album with Steve Morse, I liked the album with the orchestra, I even like Freaks of Nature. The new album? Not really.
Where I come from, it's okay to state your opinion. There's nothing negative about an opinion.

I don't think so. I disagree. I don't think hatespeech has anything to do with an opinion. Insults, racism, sexism, misogyny, trolling, marginalizing etc. etc. are not expressing opinions, but have a different agenda: dehumanizing people.
In no way, I'm hating on Kansas or trying to get under anyones skin. Carefully read my original post. I was clearly stating that the new album did nothing for me. All I did was asking for the point of view of others.
But clearly it's all lost in translation or else I don't know what's happening here. I feel less and less inclined to visit this forum, this way.

Of course you are. No one is saying that an appreciation thread has to remain 100% positive, but you have to admit that it's a little odd to start an appreciation thread with a negative comment.

Of course it's still an opinion. You and I may not like or agree with the content of what is being said, but it's opinion nonetheless. Opinion doesn't cease to be opinion because it's hatespeech.

I have a different idea about hatespeech. I often feel it's more aimed at just being negative, and that the hatespeecher himself knows it's ridiculous. Maybe the first post in the thread is odd, but hey, we can talk about positive Kansas stuff anytime. :D

I haven't listened to their later stuff, but their early prog epics are astounding. Tons of energy in the instrumentals, really powerful clear melodies, they're such fun intense rock songs, and I think sorely overlooked. It's a shame they only have a handful of them. Journey to Mariabronn, Apercu, Song For America, all those ones. So fun.

Listening to it right now on you tube.....a good solid effort but it ain't classic Kansas and without Walsh and Livgren they'll never do those albums again.
