I was just thinking of D. Boon when I saw this. A couple of nights ago I was recording a lead guitar part for one of my band's songs, and I told my bandmate I was trying to go for a Minutemen sound. He wasn't familiar with them, so I played him "Maybe Partying Will Help", and he helped me get the guitar sound that D. uses on the solo in that tune.
I remember when D Boon died. I had just discovered the band a couple of months before (they opened for REM on the Fables tour), and they were rapidly becoming my favorite band. A few years later I saw Mike Watt's new band fIREHOSE and got to talk with him after the show. I told him about my history with and love of the Minutemen, and we had a misty eyed moment together. He wrote "D Boon Forever" on the back of my t-shirt. Anyone who listens to the Minutemen and feels/understands how fantastic they were, is in it for the long haul. Fans feel their music at the molecular level. They were one of a handful of truly interesting and original bands to come out of the entire punk era -- in fact I don't even really think of them as punk. Thanks for sharing the article Jim, and giving me the excuse to ramble about this band once again...

Huge Minutemen fan here. Saw them twice and they were incredible both times. When D died I kept reading Guitar Player every month waiting for them to write an article on him or a mention or anything. When nothing came I wrote the editor a letter all about D and why they should write about him. They never wrote anything, guess they were too busy covering "real" guitarists so I cancelled my subscription.
I highly recommend the 2 DVD documentary "We Jam Econo". The 1st DVD is the story of the Minutemen and includes extensive interviews with Watt & George, and shorter interviews with Rollins, Spot, etc. The 2nd DVD features 3 live Minutemen shows from '80, '84 & '85. Life's too short to not hear the Minutemen
