I know even less about these years, thus I'll go with 1968 for being closer to the 70s.

The years 67-70 are incredible. I wouldn't know how to pick one over the other actually. I have sooo much music from these years - mostly because 60s music was my first real love.

Where did you find that Steve Miller Clip?!?!? Strike that, I know - YouTube.....It's just that I've been looking for that track for ages. I have it on cd myself, but there's been a number of discussions on PA about the first prog rock song/the first prog band, album you name em, and each time I think about In My First Mind. The feel of that track is a clearcut blueprint of the symphonic prog rock rolling across the 70s. I also think Fripp had a few listens to this before he started fiddling around with the mellotron

A strange thing that Steve Miller Band is not in Proto Prog Section.
I am not entirely sure most folks know of Steve Miller Band outside of his later successes with Fly Like An Eagle and The Joker which of course have nothing to do with prog....
but those first 60s releases could very well fit in proto imo.
One of the cool things about the Steve Miller Band is however that they started out as Chuck Berry's backing band. Hell they had just quit, before going into the studio to record Children of the Future. Quite a ways from good ol Chuck - even if it contains a fair few nods to the blues.

68 is more advanced. It's a pretty obvious choice
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

1967, so many great debut albums that year, like Pink Floyd, Procol Harum, Grateful Dead, etc. 1968 was a great year too. This was a tough choice. Also, my dad was born in 1967.

I find saucerful pretty embarrassing. The Beatles of 66 and 67 are quite a bit better. My fave cream and Deep purple album of the 60s were in 68
