Home secretary Theresa May has lost her legal bid for the MI5 intelligence about the 7/7 bombings in London, to be scrutinised behind closed doors.

BBC Article

The Inquiry seeks to ascertain if there was intelligence failings, and if the attacks could have been prevented. The ring leaders were known to MI5, and had in the months before been in contact with known active AQ operatives. The government may challenge the legal ruling, citing 'national security' concerns, and do have the power to make some of the process fall under the control of a 'Public Inquiry' in which case the intelligence will not be shared with relatives of victims. A solicitor speaking on behalf of the victims families has said it's not clear how intelligence relating to the incident six years ago could still be deemed too sensitive.

It's long forgotten now, but in 2005 the Blair government passed the 'Enquiries Act' which allows the respective government minister to dictate the scope of any public inquiry. Effectively this could mean that government is never again held to account for any event, investigated by this route.

I hope the legal ruling stands, but my money is on the Home Sec challenging this ruling, and winning.
