Hi guys,

as I was DJing few days ago in a local club (in Prague) I recall doing some improvisational mixes and since these usually come as a one off deal so I thought I would make some list of the ones I liked and allow other people to share theirs (if possible)...as well as to keep a list of these to remember them in the future

so lets see how it goes...

here are my first tips for you...

  • Bjork - Vespertine : Heirloom --> David Bowie - Low : Weeping Wall
  • Pink Floyd - Relics : Cirrus Minor --> Telefon Tel Aviv - A Map Of What Is Effortless :  What It Is Without The Hand That Wields It

the first one - well I love the more ambient side of Bjork's music and this piece is my favourite from the Vespertine record... dunno why, but I thought I might blend it with Bowie's Low...as I was running out of time since the first song was already halfway through I put the needle to the start of a random track...and BAM...what a nice mix it was Wink

the second one - this one is easy... Cirrus Minor has extremly slow fadeout, while TTA on the contrary has a long intro... as the second song soon develops into a fierce electonic hell I reckon this as a perfect candidate for a 'DJ set transition'

Dobrý ráno,

interesting. I've never though that rock music can be mixed in a good way (you know how some "so called" DJ's can ruin it all with adding dance rhythms etc...)

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

:) zdravim...hi there

well it is definetly more difficult then mixing classic 'club/dance music' as the rythmic part is more complex (usually) and the music was not tailored for that...

but I dont care - although I do have some dance records I still prefer to play guitar music and such
most of the times it is a question of selecting the right tracks more than their actual inter-mixing, but I still enjoy this

I understand this "dance" part, sometimes, you find people (and I mean good people, for example some of your friends like to listen to this kind of music, right ?) who like dance and hate rock. But what about to try to mix something like beginning of Shine on You Crazy Diamond with for example Money. Just wild guess, who knows if this can work.

Related question - how do these people take your mixes ? Are they happy ?

Well...since I usually propagate my 'parties' as oldies/psychedelic/whatever style, I usually get an appropriate set of guests
havent had any problems with 'audience compatibility' yet ;-)

dont get me wrong: I have nothing against club music...Im able to do these kinds of sets anyway...but my heart is elsewhere ;)
