im fine with $12 for the most part. but $18-$21 is a little much in my opinion, and most of them seem to be closer to that price

If you need to go cheap you need to go used. half.com is my favorite, though amazon does used also. Edited by Slartibartfast - July 15 2009 at 23:11 |

I've found it to be a good place for cheap new stuff, which is mostly what I buy these days. But you can connect with a variety of individuals and independent stores for used and new stuff. The prices are fixed so if you don't like the e-bay haggling you can find some good deals. I've seen some outrageous prices offered for out of print stuff, but sometimes you can find a good deal, Edited by Slartibartfast - July 17 2009 at 11:11 |

I find a lot on amazon for low prices, through their marketplace dealers. Some CDs, I end up paying more on shipping than I do on the price of the CD itself there.

When you can buy many DVDs for less than 8 bucks, it's irritating to spend more than that on CDs. :/

Buy some of the albums as mp3 downloads. That way you can lower the overall/average price of the albums.

I buy from amazon & half mostly on the web.
But we in Massacusetts are lucky to have a fantastic chain, Newbury Comics, that carries plenty of prog. And most of it is on sale the first week it's released. (Plus, the owner, Mike Driese, is a great guy)

I do believe I got something mail order from them once. I think it was probably through half.com. ![]() I remember thinking, a comic store selling CDs? Interesting. Edited by Slartibartfast - July 16 2009 at 09:48 |

Hi,
In general, I would say Amazon for almost all prog anything ...
But there is one problem ... they wouldn't know what is prog from a feather up their butt! But you can find just about anything in there since it is worldwide ...
In general, you should search for the bands, even old ones on the Internet and you will find links and they usually have some stuff through them ... and then there are some that do not ... for example, Alan Stivell either has the worst management on this side of the earth, or he simply doesn't care for anything that has been recorded ... many of his albums are not even listed on his website! And I'm not selling mine, even on Amazon!
All the Klaus Schulze, AshRaTempel and Tangerine Dream, I get direct now ... might as well support the artists properly and take out the middle man ... and the prog distributors that don't care either!
I have used Doug Larson a lot, and he's fairly good, although his catalogue listing is not always up to date and I'm not sure he can keep up with it! Eurock is really eccentric and Archie will always be that way! Wayside I did not get good service from and never bought from them again. Musea ... let's say that they don't speak English and are not capable of saying anything about any bands to help us check them out. At least Archie had a sampler that helped some.
And that's about it ... for more modern prog, I would use the band's links or website ... if that band does not have any website or control of their music, I can almost guarantee you that no one will know them tomorrow.

That's a shame. Wayside is my #1 supplier; I have received nothing but prompt and excellent service from them, as have many others around here. |

Now, the stores are about 1/3 CDs, 1/3 DVDs, and the rest of each store has T-shirts, novelty items, small electronics, and even a few comics.

For any ProgHeads in England and Scotland it is well worth a saunter to a Fopp if you one near you. I was up in Edinburgh for job interview yesterday and managed to make a detour to Fopp off Princess Street. Found the new CDs for Mars Volta, Mastodon and Astra as well as Serj Tankian's Elect the Dead which I have been looking for.

When it comes to full-on prog, Syn-phonic is the place to go. I've been ordering music from Syn-phonic since '95! http://synphonic.8m.com/

Here's another vote for Greg Walker at Synphonic--great selection, fast shipping, reasonable prices.
