Topic: Zeuhl? Posted: May 15 2008 at 15:03 |
I've been trying to expand my prog tastes....used to be stuck in Prog Metal and Heavy Prog with KC and Genesis on the side. Recently really got into Mahavishnu Orchestra and i've always liked the more obscure experimental genres and i want to give Zeuhl a go.
Which album or albums "sum" up the genre and would be a good starting point for a newbie?

Don't listen to all of the people who will show up to tell you that this is too difficult for you to start with. Go back to the seminal album.
MAGMA - MDK
Kohntarkosz is actually better, but jump in with both feet into MDK first for a feel of the whole thing.

Magma - MDK seconded.
That's how I started, and look at me now.
And then get Tago Mago by Can and discover the wonderful world of Krautrock.

Their brilliant Live/Hhai album from 1975 is a good starter as well. Fantastic stuff, and fairly accessible, at least to my ears.
But yeah, MDK is one of the key Magma studio albums, and represents the Zeuhl characteristics perfectly!

That's always my first recommendation - it's readily available at mid price as well, although most of Magma's discography is now available on emusic.
Magma aside, you might want to try some Japanese Zeuhl - Koenjihyakkei are my favourites, and all of the albums are worth a listen - and some of the Magma offshoots like Weidorje and Zao.

I'd say Kohntarkosz, it's the best start off to Magma and Zeuhl.
