Topic: Your opinion on The Flaming Lips Posted: April 14 2008 at 13:23 |
For me, TFL have always been a band that suffered from poor songwriting, but when they were on, they were on. I have the Soft Bulletin and CLouds Taste Metallic. What do you think of them and what's their best album you think?

I've been a Flaming Lips for probably a bit longer than a hardcore prog fan. Yoshimi is a complete masterpiece, and I suppose The Soft Bulletin might be, but it just has a weird feel to me. At War With the Mystics is half excellent and half mediocre pop. Their earlier stuff is somewhat shoddy, but In a Priest-Driven Ambulance is a classic.

I like them quite a lot. Soft Bulletin is the best one to my ears. Yoshimi was great, and their early albums have also found a place in my heart. I was not too fond of At War with the Mystics though. It seemed like they were trying to match Yoshimi's glory and fell very short of it.

Singing along to "All We Have is Now" remains emotional to me. I might work back through their discography but there are a zillion bands under the sun and I'm not convinced they're particularly consistent.
still, "All We Have is Now" is perfect lappy music

The Flaming Lips were an excellent band who lost their appeal after guitarist Ronald Jones left. I was lucky enough to see them in 1996 (before Jones' departure) and they were amazing! Their early albums were a bit rough (although they each had a few gems) but the albums Hit to Death in the Future Head, Transmissions from the Satellite Heart and Clouds Taste Metallic are all fantastic. I'm not keen on the direction they've been going from The Soft Bulletin onwards, they don't rock anymore.

Really good band. Poor songwriting? I could think of much worse. I prefer their pre-1995 stuff, but as far as I'm concerned they haven't done anything bad. My favourite album would be In a Priest Driven Ambulance.
