Coming soon, is the 50th anniversary of the recording and release of the third studio album by German Symphonic Prog band Triumvirat, 1975's "Spartacus", a brilliant concept album about the famous gladiator who led a revolt against the forces of Imperial Rome around 73 BC. The album was recorded between Feb. 3rd and March 4th, 1975, in Cologne, Germany, and it's tapes were mixed by none other than the famous Beatles engineer, the late Geoff Emerick. Triumvirat had made international news with their previous album from 1974, Illusions On A Double Dimple, and that album entered the Top 50 album charts in the USA. Spartacus did even better, entering the Billboard American chart at position 27. In support of the record, the band did a tour of Europe opening for Grand Funk Railroad, and then travelled to America, opening for the likes of Supertramp and ELO, and others. Triumvirat were in some ways a bit of a challenging fit, though, and were booted from some tours as they were "stealing the show" from the headliners. Tour dates were planned for Canada, but did not come to fruition, as there were passport difficulties.
I feel this record is an amazing example of progressive rock in the mid 1970s, and is a thrilling record, both instrumentally, and lyrically. Triumvirat would never again reach the success of this record, though. Edited by presdoug - 19 hours 57 minutes ago at 10:24 |
