Maybe a better question would be, "Is there a movie like 'Hunger'"?
He's in every scene. The people he meets along the way aren't important, and take up no more than a few seconds. He's a writer who can't eat because he can't write. He can't write because he doesn't eat. The little money he makes, he gives away. He's in a battle with himself.

I think because the character from Knut Hamsun's "Sult" is so rare also helps this 10/10.. Per Oscarsson is also one hell of an actor who could be so convincing in Danish or English (Peckinpah's "Wine Noon")

May I ask, what you meant by "Solitary Des"? This forum shortens thread titles when they're posted from what I understand.

Joker might be a film that partially fits this description although the main character becomes a villain in the end because he perceives that society hates him as well as the disinfranchised in general so leaves him no other choice.

The Machinist is the first that comes to mind. Not sure if it meets all your criteria, but is definitely a character within himself.

Hi,

Not sure I understand the request ... but here are a few ... though I wanted to list a lot more films, since so many of them are about one person/character, it seems like. I imagine that Paul Cox's film fits here really well ... it is a film wroth watching and then some ... that performance alone is out of this world.

A Woman's Tale (Paul Cox) ... the story of Sheila Florence, and Australian actress.

Aguirre, The Wrath of God (Werner Herzog) ... Klaus Kinsky is it the whole time. And the ending sequence touched up to match the music by Popol Vuh is out of this world.

After The Fox (Victoria de Sica) ... Peter Sellers goes nuts the in this film, and is insane to watch ... he might not be there 100% of the time, but his 90% is crazy to watch.

Castaway (Nicolas Roeg) ... Oliver Reed and Amanda Donohue spend a year on an island from the novel by Lucy Irvine. Incredible cinematography and far out moments!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Hunger (Michael Fassbender as IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands)
The Elephant Man (John Hurt as Joseph Merrick)
My Left Foot (Daniel Day-Lewis as Christy Brown)
...a vigorous circular motion hitherto unknown to the people of this area, but destined
to take the place of the mud shark in your mythology...

Just saw this today by chance, and thought it perfectly fits here.

Pirosmani (1969)

The concept of a character firmly enmeshed with personal battles who stays trapped in unending cycles truly distinguishes it from other films. The narrative focuses entirely on inner conflicts since external elements play no role in this story. The tension in this scene receives its maximum expression from Per Oscarsson's skilled acting. A comparable motion picture in this spirit would be The Wrestler by Darren Aronofsky which presents a lone man thinking about his choices while he remains isolated.
