I am opening this thread in honor of the 50th anniversary of the release of the album You by Gong. At first I thought to open a topic about the album as such, and then I decided to expand it to the entire subgenre of space rock.
So, welcome to the dedicated thread on space-rock, a genre that transcends earthly boundaries and takes us on sonic journeys through the cosmos. Whether you're a long-time fan or just discovering the ethereal sounds of bands like Hawkwind and Gong, please share your thoughts, favorite albums and songs, and personal experiences with this mesmerizing genre. Let's come together to celebrate the music that inspires us to dream beyond the stars!

Speaking of space-rock journeys, I'm thrilled to announce a gem from 2006: the live video of Gong performing "Isle of Everywhere." This cosmic performance is not just a gig; it's an intergalactic experience that transcends time and space!

How wonderful, and a great way to start the thread (Gong-You)!  Welcome to PA!!

I saw Gong in Chicago, March 10, 1996 and they were amazing!!  Daevid Allen, Bloomdido, Mike Howlett, and Steffe Sharpstrings on guitar & synth!!

I looked Mr. Sharpstrings up recently, he is recording some amazing space-rock with glissando guitar, synth and all sorts!!  Please check this out!  He has a lot of material on YouTube and Bandcamp!!

Ah, the cosmic vibrations of the Gong as well as Mr. Sharpstrings' echo are like a vortex of colours swirling in the mind's eye. Daevid Allen and his merry band of sonic sorcerers—Bloomdido, Mike Howlett, and Steffe Sharpstrings—were surely conjuring up a space-rock symphony that danced with the stars and tickled the very fabric of reality!🌈✨
Now, get ready to ride the waves of sound and spirit as I share a live video of Gong feat. Steve Hillage performing their mind-bending anthem, "Master Builder." Let's tune into the frequencies of the universe and let our minds expand like a kaleidoscope in full bloom, where the music flows like a river of stardust and every note is a step towards spacey enlightenment!! 🚀💫

On the topic of Gong - You, it was only a fairly recent discovery for me that Steve Hillage's "The Glorious Om Riff" is a basically a version of "Master Builder" from You. I've always loved the "The Glorious Om Riff".

There is an irony that this thread is about all things Space Rock given that Gong is not in that genre on PA.

Anyway, I've always regarded Hawkwind as the definitive space rock band. Perhaps the ultimate Hawkwind album is the live Space Ritual. But my favourite Hawkwind track is "Opa-Loka" (from Warrior on the Edge of Time):

Another of my favourite space rock albums is Nektar - Journey to the Centre of the Eye.

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Gazeuse! Unravelling Gong's complicated discography of 57 varieties of album turned out to be almost as tricky as walking the high-wire at a Continental Circus. Gong have been in existence for over half a century now, so I thought it About Time we paid Tribute to a great band and Rejoiced together in their wonderful music. Gong breezed in like a Shamal with their debut album Magick Brother in 1970, but their real Breakthrough came three years later with the acclaimed Radio Gnome Invisible Trilogy. Gong began as a band led by Aussie Daevid Allen, but they then had a Second Wind in the mid-1970's when Pierre Moerlen branched off to form his own jazzy version of Gong. A later third version of the band - known as Mother Gong - emerged in the late-70's, led by Wild Child Gilli Smyth. I don't want to create A Storm in a Teapot, but personally speaking, I wouldn't give a Flying Teapot for any of Mother Gong's albums, although I realise they have a strong following here at PA. Anyway, to cut a long story short, my favourite Gong album by far is Downwind  - a precious album to treasure like an Angel's Egg - and I'll now Leave It Open for You to choose your favourite Gong album. Smile

Ah, the cosmic conundrum of Gong! Isn't it delightful when subgenres play hide-and-seek? While Gong may be orbiting in the Canterbury scene on Progarchives, their sound is like a cosmic smoothie—blending elements of jazz, psychedelia, and yes, even space-rock! It's as if they took a detour through the galaxy and decided to drop off some funky vibes at the Canterbury café. So, while they might not have their official "space rock" badge on PA, we all know that their music can launch you into the stratosphere of sonic exploration. Who needs labels when you can have interstellar jams?
Therefore, prepare to embark on a cosmic journey as we dive into the kaleidoscopic sounds of Steve Hillage Band's 2006 rendition of "Solar Musick Suite," where the sunbeams align and the music transcends reality! Tune in for a mind-bending experience that promises to warp your senses and elevate your spirit! 🌈😄

I've never thought of Gong as a Space Rock band either, but seeing as Gong were the first band mentioned at the top of this thread by a new PA member who's clearly a fan of Gong, this seemed like a good place to post their entire discography (and that's just for starters). Smile

Should I perhaps have titled this thread "The Cosmic Odyssey of Gong's "You": A Space-Rock Revelation"? So there you have it! Gong's "You" isn't just another "Canterbury" album; it's a transcendent experience—a sonic odyssey that boldly claims its rightful place among the stars as a definitive Space Rock creation. As we celebrate its 50th anniversary this year, let us raise our glasses (or perhaps our bongs) to this timeless space-rock masterpiece that continues to inspire generations of dreamers and wanderers alike. ✨

Gong's You absolutely is a Space Rock album, as well as being Canterbury.  Prog Archives is limited to one genre (or label) for whole discographies while band's individual album could be labelled differently commonly and individual albums could have multiple labels.  I think it makes more sense in such topics to think on the album level rather than whole discographies.  Not all Gong would be described as Space Rock.  You is for me its spaciest album, and for me its greatest album, but the whole Radio Gnome Invisible Trilogy has Space rock qualities. The earlier Gong albums I would call Psychedelic, and later ones more on the jazz fusion/ jazz rock side.

Gong's You, Angel's Egg and Flying Teapot are all great and applicable to this topic.  Whatever you call You, You is out of this world!

Hey you, cosmic traveler! 🌌✨

As we drift through the kaleidoscopic waves of sound and as I can see that we both love stars, I invite you to embark on a sonic journey with "Continuum" by Spacehead. This 2003 live version is a vibrant tapestry woven from the threads of Gongonesque spacey sound and Hawkwind's interstellar heavy rock vibes. Imagine yourself floating in a nebula of colours, where each note resonates like stardust dancing in the cosmic breeze.

Let your mind expand as you tune into this celestial symphony that transcends time and space, inviting you to explore the infinite realms of consciousness. 🌈💫 Feel the groove pulsate through your being, awakening your inner spirit and connecting you to the universal heartbeat.

So grab your favorite tie-dye shirt, light some incense, and let’s ride this astral wave together! Peace, love, and good vibes to all! ✌️🌿

Thanks, I enjoy all of that music, but what we call "Space Rock" is now rather moldy & old.  I prefer Tangerine Dream in the genre.

Steffe Sharpstrings (former guitarist to Gong) is putting out some amazing, and new, Space Rock, please explore!!  I'm VERY impressed!!

Space rock, a genre that emerged in the early 1970s, continued to evolve through the 1990s and into the 21st century, with new bands incorporating cosmic themes and experimental sounds into their music. 🌌 Boldly exploring sonic landscapes, these artists drew inspiration from earlier pioneers while also pushing the boundaries of what space rock could be, resulting in a diverse array of sounds that resonated with both old fans and new listeners alike.

🚀💫 KREL’s journey from local gigs in Greater Manchester to international recognition illustrates both their dedication to craft and the evolving landscape of music during the early '90s.✨ Their discography reflects an ongoing exploration of sound that continues to inspire new generations of musicians within the space-rock genre. 🌌✨😄🌠 Space Rock is here to stay! 🌠😄✨🌌

🚀 Hawkwind delivered an amazing performance at the Stonehenge Free Festival in 1984, captivating the audience with their signature blend of space rock and psychedelic sounds while also embodying the spirit of counterculture that defined the festival atmosphere. 🌅

I've always liked Guru, Guru. They are one of those bands in life that is divided into 3 parts. Space Rock, Jazz Rock , World Music....however...I don't see them that way because I hear a Space Rock style on the Fusion type albums and the more World Music oriented stuff. If you want to see it as divided that's fine. I like their approach to Space Rock. The longevity of it is evident from early 70s to the present on albums like Rotate.

Hawkwind I have mixed feelings sometimes depending on the end result or overall affect their albums have on me. Have close to 30 cds.

Gong are one of my favorites. I've been listening to Gong since 1973 so I'm up and down with my listening time. Maybe once a month I'll listen to Gong.

Amon Duul II ...I have the first 3 on cd.

Cosmic Jokers, Neu, Ashra Tempel, Can..I've been listening to these bands since the mid to late 70s. At one time I owned everything on LP. Now I have most of it on CD.
