Hi,

I'm in Iceland for a while, and wondering if you can help me dig deeper into their music.

I'm familiar with the famous groups (Sugarcubes, Sigur Ros, Dead Skeletons) and they all seem to veer toward the proggy and psychedelic ends of the spectrum.

Does anyone know of anything else that's interesting? Would especially be intrigued by older prog music if there is any?

I don't have any special knowledge of Icelandic music, but I did look up the top Icelandic prog albums in the PA database. Only 12 albums were listed, from 3 artists: Björk, Sigur Rós, and Eldberg.

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

From the book " Scented Gardens of the mind , guide to golden eara of prog rock 68/80" by Dag Erik Asbjonsen 2000
EiK : 2 Lps in 76 and 77 (Camel/ Yes)
Jonas and Einar : 1 LP in 72 (folk rock)
Mánar : 1 LP in 71 ( looks good according to the author, Like "Old man and the sea" and "Junipher Green")
Odmenn : 1 eponym double LP in 1970 ( good according to the author and better than any Trubrot's Lp))
Svanfridur : 1 LP in 1972 (mix of heavy prog and nordic folk)
Trůbrot : 4 LPs from 69 to 72 (pop songs and eclectic choice of cover versions )
In 2000, only references of Trubrot 4 Lps were given by the author
Author listed more folk references
All the materials are unknown to me
if I had to chose i 'd probably select Eik, Odmenn and Manar
best regards
M.

Eldberg (two good albums in 2011 and 2015 then they disappeared- they were very retro sounding)

Thank you!

That's brilliant! Just started to check those out.

It sounds to me like they're quite inspired by the British folk-rock? I noticed that there's a lot of British vinyl in the Iceland flea market.

Eldberg? Not to my ears. I'm not sure what their influences were actually but they had lots of organ. I have both and they are both enjoyable (you might have to be ok with foreign singing though). Apparently the one guy in the band was also in Todmobile who worked with Jon Anderson and Steve Hackett. Their version of Awaken is worth watching on youtube.

I have one of their albums lined up for review this summer, might be the debut.
When I think Iceland I think Sigur Ros. Love some of their videos that were filmed from up there.

That was really cool. I like how they work with that bluesy space-rock. Nice, nice stuff

I don't think there are really any. I mean I know this site lists Bjork and Sigur Ros here, but tbh they aren't really prog. They're great, but they definitely aren't prog rock or prog metal. There might be some underground Icelandic prog groups though, but not quite sure.
