It Happened Today that I completed a Jumbo listening marathon of all of Curved Air's eighteen albums, so let's take a trip back in time with The Purple Speed Queen, Sonja Kristina and her band. As well as being a rock goddess, Sonja Kristina also had the demanding Situation of being a Young Mother during Curved Air's heyday in the 1970's. You Know you're listening to Curved Air when you hear the sound of Darryl Way's manic violin playing, which can best be described as Ultra-Vivaldi. When Curved Air first emerged with their stunning debut album "Air Conditioning" at the tail-end of 1970, the wonderful World of prog was Not Quite the Same again. In a striking Metamorphosis, Darryl Way temporarily left Curved Air due to the tempting Proposition of forming his own band Wolf in 1973. Curved Air also featured the classically-trained pianist Francis Monkman (a co-founder of the classical/rock fusion band Sky), whose fingers Ever Danced over the keyboards with the agile speed of a Cheetah. Curved Air's best-known song was of course, Back Street Luv, which climbed to No. 4 in the U.K charts back in 1971. It'd be something of a Stretch to call them a "one-hit-wonder" though with eighteen albums to their credit. It's Easy to see why Curved Air have such a strong loyal following with such classics as Vivaldi, Melinda (More or Less), Phantasmagoria, and the tragic tale of the last Queen of France, Marie Antoinette. The unforgettable music of Curved Air rises Over and Above most of what passes for music on the radio these days. Despite being around for half a century now, their music is as refreshing as a warm breeze of curved air on a Bright Summer's Day.

I like their first 4 albums but don't love any of them. Very talented, seemingly not interested in commercial success on anybody else's terms, but their songs just don't consistently appeal to me. But to me they are significant for "metamorphosis" alone, one of the great epics of the prog era. I just wish they had done more like that. There are some other really good tracks strewn throughout those first 4 albums, not all of which I like but all of which I can appreciate

Surprisingly, I like their latest album best of all: The Curved Air Family Album (2019) - 26 tracks of pure magic, including Sonja Kristina's sublime version of the YES classic, "Soon" |

Much like Ken, I appreciate them but was never knocked out by their output. I think that Sonja being a sex kitten may have hurt them in the asexual world of prog rock.

The Live album is magnificent. They may be worth listening to more than I have done in recent years.

I only know the songs "back street luv" and "it happened to day." The latter was on the supernatural fairy tales box set.
The band took their name from the Terry Riley album "a rainbow in curved air." Ok, who didn't know that?

I think the first 4 studio lp's are all good.....Phantasmagoria being my favorite.
I would also recommend the Darryl Way Wolf lp's.

I always assumed being considered a rock goddess sex kitten contributed to album sales rather than hindered them. After all, it never did Debbie Harry and Blondie any harm.

Hi, I'm not sure she could give a damn about the asexual world of "prog rock", since she was much more than just a singer having been one of the actresses in the London (first I think) production of HAIR, which might not have given her or the other folks a bit more fame, but it was clear that she had talent and ability and it was taken advantage of. I like the "eccentric" style of things, although I sensed right from the start a bit of a problem with either Darryl Way or Francis Monkman ... as if they wanted more time in the front, which was taken by Sonja, because she stood out, and they didn't, despite their ability and musicianship. Sadly ... after the band Wolf, Darryl Way kinda disappeared. My favorite parts, and the long stuff is far out for my ears, is playing the original and the Live (3rd or 4th album, not sure) of Vivaldi with Cannons ... it was spectacular, and you could easily make a nice segway (Guy Guden did it many times!!!), with McKendree Spring, Esperanto and a few more songs to make up a heck of a 30 minute run! Some folks will need some Q-Tips for their ears! Play it loud! Edited by moshkito - February 01 2021 at 10:04 |

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

What a coincidence - I was just listening to "Dance of Love", probably my favorite along with "Lovechild" Check those out... The latter is was done much later, but it's still great... I also love "Dazed" and the two popular ones mentioned already.

They're two of my Curved Air favourites too, so that makes it a triple coincidence. I'd like to do the Dance of Love with Sonja Kristina, although I should be so lucky.

The glorious seventies. There were actually quite a few prog or "proggy" bands with female lead singers. Amon Duul II, Babe Ruth, Renaissance, Ruphus, Octopus, Curved Air, Frumpy, Brainticket and a few more.

TBH, I always was bored out of my skull from their studio albums, but I am discovering their unseen on-stage powers which gives a welcome harder/rockier rawer edge. which does make them a tad more interesting (unfortunately their classical-raiding are still unsufferable), and that's do more with DW than SK. TBH, I don't think it's her sex-kitten (debatable, I don't find her a sex symbol) that would hurt , but her vocals themselves. She's relatively good, but there are times when she shows little control, especally when "going wild". There are sreechy moments (not like Janis's very welcomed screeches) that are annoying. I can only think of one worse example: Babe Ruth's Janita Haan.
Well, ste sex-symbol thing certainly does seem to be important than you think, because she states that she also worked as a Playboy bunny in the TV stint that PP posted. Seems obvious to me that she would've easily not mentionned it some 40/50 years later (especially in today's feminist rage context), if it was that unimportant. TBH, neither DW ab$nd FM had the chops to overtake the underwhelming SK. I mean she's OK in her role, but nothing great. And DW and FM are no Hendrix or Emerson either. let's just stay above the moral melee
