Most avant, for me, is hard to enjoy. I like dissonance to an extent, but when they go off the deep end and play arrangements that seem to do nothing but annoy or show off, I shut it down. French TV, Mirthkon, Piniol, some Mr. Bungle and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum I like. Thinking Plague, Yugen, and Univers Zero are out of my comfort zone and I'll never assimilate to.
So my question is what avant bands would you recommend that are similar to what I listed as enjoyable? I know RIO is related to avant on PA and I love Zappa and Keneally. So please don't recommend RIO bands. Thanks. |

The Residents?
Or perhaps, associated with The Residents is Snakefinger: |
|
No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Now that I have mentioned The Residents, I may as well post this:

Thanks for the recommendations. Some I liked more than others. These are my initial thoughts.
Guapo - Gloomy Anekdoten vibe, good playing. Secret Chiefs 3 - Not for me. Out there. John Zorn - Fast and frantic after long intro. Repetitive jam after. Not bad. Miriodor - Probably my fave. Like how the arrangement of the song is layered. Snakefinger - Quirky and out there. The Residents - Dissonance and off time rhythms, not my thing. I'll check the others out. Thanks all and keep the suggestions coming. |

Not sure whether this is listed under AvantProg, but awesome album: a.P.A.t.T.'s Fun with Music album is exactly what it says on the tin: BTW, did you try Cardiacs?

Thanks so much I have some listening to do. Some more initial comments.
oO...- Like the heaviness. Vocals are an acquired taste? a.P.A.T. - Like the classical string influences. Weird video. Alec K... - Polka jam. Okay. Cardiacs - Know this band. Very busy music. Need to be in a certain mood to listen to them. Cheer - Accident - Sounds like Jaza Jazzist. Simple for Avant? Lost Crowns - Busy like Cardiacs. Intriguing, promising. Ni - Love it. Brutal, loud and cranky. Uz Jsme Doma - Wins for funniest video. Not very Avant sounding but love the song. Thanks to all and keep em coming. |

Alec K - yeah, it's accordion based avant folk with loads of effects. Cheer-Accident are deceptively simple, there's loads going on, stick with them. Lost Crowns - London based band associated with Cardiacs collective so there's certainly a connection. Ni - one half of Piniol (the other being Poil, hence the band name) Uz Jsme Doma are kinda like a Czech Cardiacs, punky with loads going on, Avant enough to play the Rock In Opposition festival, great band.

Thanks for the additional entries Mascodagama. I liked ALIIG. The others lie outside my comfort zone.
Again, thanks to everyone. I have a lot of bands to check out. There is so much great music that I will never hear but I'll always keep searching. |

To embed videos, you place only the video ID between the TUBE tags. |
