Hello,

I like H. P. Lovecraft and I also like prog. So, as you can guess I want recommendations of prog music that are inspired by Lovecraft's works, using Lovecraftian themes, or that are directly about Lovecraft and/or his prose.

I know and love THE STORIES OF H.P. LOVECRAFT: A SYNPHONIC COLLECTION

...and also: Infinite Spectrum - Haunter of the Dark.

P.S. You can also recommend non-prog stuff, as long as they are not extreme metal.

Thank you.

This one of my favorite newer BOC tracks....all about the Old Gods........from Hidden Mirror.

vNow is the time the moon is in alignment
With the unknown zodiac, the untold sign
Of the fiery maniac within each breast
Awaits a stirring irridescent whirring
Of a six eyed god whose wings beat
In a time so odd, so very odd
And we're all lost, all of us blessedly lost
Forever (forever and ever and ever)
Forever (forever and ever and ever)
Forever (forever and ever and ever)
Forever (forever and ever)
Now is the time the old gods return
Now is the time the old gods return
Exactly when the world is not expecting it
Exactly when we're sure of ourselves
That's exactly when the old gods return
And sweep our cities back into hell

Now is the time that the old gods return
Now is the time that water begins to burn
Now is the time that the apes take wing
And we recognize them from that Oz thing
And we realize it was a prophecy
We realize it was a prophecy
Yeah the old gods laugh, it amuses them
The old gods laugh

One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

I'm not really sure but if you like horror you might enjoy the music of Goblin. Many of their albums were used as soundtracks to horror movies. Also, the director John Carpenter composed music that I'm guessing has an eerie feel to it. I know that's not what you are asking for but I can't think of any HP Lovecraft specific prog or music.

Another favorite of mind...has a Lovecraft theme to me....

Threadbare, the nightmare
Summoning the sound
From out of the darkness
Newfound
Sun cracked, the abstract
Seer of the sand
At mountains of madness
Crash land
Told the tall tale
Chapter and the verse
On the balance
Bounty and a curse
Into bright white
Only to reverse
For the Earth
Swallows whole
Tic toc stop
The draining body cold
Demon claws they
Crack the crust
To cascade through the fold
Bottomless the
Black gates lie
To trap the rapturing
Choking on the
Bated breath
The brink of capturing Shadow sister fate
Sharp tongue, black lung
Cursed cries the unclean
Lightless, dark cess
Burning breath the unseen
Last gate, mutate
Drawn upon the mad score
Wayworn, reborn
Awakening the black chord

And this, from the same band.  A classic psychedelic experience. Just transcendent.  Does not surprise me that Dr Wu knew of them.

Also, this used to be my answer phone answering message (from the same band, not inspired directly by Lovecraft):

I was going to mention the band H.P. Lovecraft but wasn't sure if their music actually had anything to do with the writer.

I'll finish (for now...) with Pickman's Model, a little vignette from The Utopia Strong:

Surprised no one mentioned this... They are here on PA, and this instrumental track is an absolute masterpiece (and not extreme in the least):

BTW, Dr Wu, great call with "The Old Gods Return", an absolutely stunning songClap! BOC's entire Imaginos album was also heavily influenced by HP Lovecraft's work.

John Zorn's Electric Masada album At The Mountains Of Madness is excellent.
