    Posted: July 29 2018 at 04:12

Generally speaking, I focus on the music rather than the lyrics. However, in the case of Van der Graaf Generator, the lyrics are an extra dimension to the music that I enjoy, and there are particular lyrics that I especially like.

My favourite VdGG lyric is my signature ("I was thinking about thinking but it really didn't get me very far."), which is the opening lyric of Blackroom (from Time Vaults - and hence a VdGG lyric and not just a Peter Hammill lyric).

Other favourite lyrics include:

"I run because I don't know where the prison lies."

"You'll begin to wonder if the points of all the ancients myths are solemnly directed straight at you."

"Ghosts betray you, ghosts betray you, in the night they steal your eye from its socket and the ball hangs fallen on your cheek."

"It's far too late to turn, unless it's to stone."

"Alone, he opens to the world... but it's much too late. He's been left, in the end, without a face."

"She's into lizards, she's into snakes, he's into trauma - still got the shakes from a lady who only talked dogs and cats making love in the alley - she thought like that."

"Living, if you claim that all that entails is breathing, eating, defecating, screwing, drinking, spewing, sleeping, sinking ever down and down and ultimately passing away time which no longer has any meaning."

What are your favourite VdGG lyrics?

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

So many lines from one of the most inventive artists I know -
I could choose many, but, this :
‘Shower curtain imperative, in the presence of acid, now feeling placid, is death’
One of numerous examples.
Oh, it’s VDGG, not Hammill himself......
VDGG - dunno, perhaps
‘Greasy machinery sliding on rails, young minds and bodies on steel spokes impaled !’
‘What choices are left but to die’..........

Hammill's lyrics are special indeed. The whole of "Still Life" is hands down my favourite song of all time lyrically. I have a soft spot for these here lines, especially with Hammill's maniacal delivery:
Take away the threat of death and all you're
Left with is a round of make-believe.
Marshal every sullen breath and though you're
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy
It's still the ring by which you hope to be
Engaged
"Larks' tongues. Wrens' livers. Chaffinch brains. Jaguars' earlobes. Wolf nipple chips. Get 'em while they're hot. They're lovely. Dromedary pretzels, only half a denar."

My fave lyricist is a dead tie between PH & Sinfield (with PG close behind...guess you have to be named Peter to be a great prog lyricist LOL    Focusing on PH, there's so many brilliant lines to choose from, but I definitely have a #1 favorite:

"Maelstrom of my memory is a vampyre and it feeds on me"

After that, some of my other favorites:

"And I too live inside me and very often don't know who I am
I know I'm not a hero, but I hope that I'm not damned"

"But now the nuptial bed is made
 The dowry has been paid
The toothless haggard features of eternity
Now welcome me between the sheets
To couple with her withered body...my wife" - especially love the way he sings it on the live album Vital Evil Smile

"The universe is doubtless unfolding just exactly as it should
And these dreams of remorse or foreboding just won't do you any good"

"Every step appears to be the unavoidable consequence of the preceding one
And in the end there beckons more and more clearly...total annihilation"

"I'm gonna stamp on the sawdust and scream 'till I'm ill
If the guitar don't get ya, the drums will" - technically a PH solo song, but the band did play it on Vital Wink

Hi,

I have no favorites whatsover.

Peter is, above all, a fantastic actor with words, and this is the difference. He can take a simple line and make it stand out. This is the case with great actors the past 100 years. They can turn one word into a whole sentence and make you think.

I, personally, can not find a favorite, but I really like "A Way Out" (it's Peter's not VdGG), as a perfect example ... it's really simple, nothing fancy, and the only thing that matters ... is the last line of it all ... and we don't even appreciate it, and think that other lines have more meaning. I'm not sure that there is a line/song with more meaning for Peter and VdGG than that one ... it says it all!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

"I've learned my lines, I know them so well,
I am ready to tell whoever will finally come in
of the line in my mind that's cold in the night....
It doesn't seem right
when there's that little dark figure running.
Won't somebody help me?"

These days I mainly just talk to plants and dogs
All human contact seems painful, risky, odd
So I stay acting god in my own universe
Where I trade cigarettes in return for songs

Stub towers in the distance
Riders cross the blasted moor
Against the horizon
Fickle promises of treaty
Fatal harbingers of war, futile orisons
Swirl as one in this flight, this mad chase
This surge across the marshy mud landscape
Until the meaning is forgotten
Hood masks the eager face, skin stretched and sallow
Headlong into the chilling night, as swift as any arrow

Feet against the flagstones
Fingers scrabbling at the lock
Craving protection
'Sanctuary!' croaks a voice
Half-strangled by the shock of its rejection
Shot the bolt in the wall, rusted the key;
Now the echoes of all frightful memory
Intrude in the silence
What a crawl against the slope - dark loom the gallows
One touch to the chapel door, how swiftly comes the arrow

"Compassion" you plead
As though they kept it in a box -
That's long since been empty
I'd like to help you somehow
But I'm in the self-same spot:
My condition exempts me
We are all on the run, on our knees;
The sundial draws a line upon eternity
Across every number
How long the time seems, how dark the shadow
How straight the eagle flies, how straight towards his arrow
How long the night is - why is this passage so narrow?
How strange my body feels, impaled upon the arrow

Not many artists where the answer could be the entire lyric to a song. In VdGG's case there are multiple songs I could have chosen for the same treatment. I think Hammill has few peers as a lyricist - in their different ways Becker/Fagen and Cohen, but who else, really?

-needs to be added imo. Don't really have a favorite but I think his songwriting skills peaked lyrically ca. 1973-1975 but but he's great both before and after of course.

At the moment,

"That the lady with the skin so white
Like something out of Blake or Burne-Jones
Always blocked out the light
And shadowed all you owned"

from When She Comes (too many to choose from though).
"It just has none of the qualities of your work that I find interesting. Abandon [?] it." - Eno

For me personally, no, because I've actually tried to think about thinking and it really didn't get me very far.

"The killer lives inside me: I can feel him move"

So many amazing lyrics in VdGG.  Pawn Hearts, Godbluff, and Still Life are all treasure chests full of wonderous lyrics.

I agree with Larkstongue41, Still Life is a beautifully dark track lyrically - "though you're ultimately bored by endless ecstasy" - wow, what insight!
Songs cast a light on you

West is where all days will someday end;
Where the colours turn from grey to gold,
And you can be with the friends.
And light flakes the golden clouds above all;
West is Mike and Susie,
West is where I love.

(from 'Refugees' on The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other)

Most of my lyrical favourites written by Peter Hammill are on the two strongest in between VdGG 1 & 2 era solo albums The Silent Corner And The Empty Stage and In Camera... I have no problem with his earlier lyrics but still think he grew immensely from 1971 to 1974... so anything on Godbluff comes closest. I don't really have an absolute favorite though. Its more of an approach.

I quite love the lyrics of White Hammer, Refugees, and many others. Emperor in His War Room is brutal

Freedom is slavery.

Ignorance is strength.”

Not really a big fan, so I only reacall a few songs well. Those two are ones that come to mind. I think I have two albums and one compilation.  I often play them without much thought.
