I wouldn't call Zeppelin progressive, but wouldn't everyone agree that they had some progressive moments

Well everything depend on your vision of prog rock... according to me it's so subjective

I agree they have so prog moments but essentially, they're not prog at all.

Absolutly! Songs like Dazed and confused, Stairway to heaven, the song remains the same, the rain song, in my times of dying, carouselamba! All great...and all have a like with prog

They had some progressive moments(albeit few and far between) but they aren't and never will be prog.

They were a blues/heavy rock band,and were way more influential to hard rock and metal than prog.

The same with Deep Purple,who shouldn't be listed in the archives

Kind of agree with TheProgtologist, except that Deep Purple did make the Concerto album which was quite an important (albeit widely regareded as failed) experiment in classical-rock fusion

I actually think most people move beyond Led Zeppelin into prog (sounds insulting, not mean to be) ... I was into the band very heavily for about 2 years before I discovered prog ... With the light/heavy dynamics that coloured their material from the very start, and a lot of pieces that didn't really have your "normal" rock structure, LZ were creative, without ever really doing too many songs that could be called progressive rock, IMO

What would the most proggresive Zeppelin tunes be? Offhand I'd say No Quarter, Rain Song, The Song Remains The Same, In The Light, Achilles Last Stand and Carrouselambra?

I was the exact same way, I still love Zeppelin and Robert Plants voice can never be matched by any vocalist (i.e. James Labrie trying to sing "the song remains the same")

but zeppelin could have very easily been prog if they would have kept the medieval castle/black magic/mysticism themes running throughout albums instead of just occasional songs

No Quarter might be the best example (especially the live version on TSRTS, John Paul Jones is an amazing musician)

Other songs like 'the battle of evermore', 'kashmir', 'the song remains the same', 'ramble on', 'in the light', 'in the evening' (maybe just intro) and dare i say 'stairway to heaven' qualify as prog in my opinion

Led Zep are a lot like The Who (and maybe even The Doors to a lesser extent). They are seminal rock bands with progressive 'periods' or songs, but not a strictly progressive band as such.

I agree with you Cluster. How about John Paul Jones solo career? I refer to Zooma album, year 2000.

It has all instrumental songs, nice unusual rithms and unusual trio line up (drums, 10 strings bass and 10 strings Stick), ambient sounds and intromissions.It is not by chance that is published through Robert Fripp DGM and it features Trey Gunn collaboration on a couple of songs

Any comment on respect of him?

I think one of their proggiest moments was with No Quarter.

"Close the door, put out the light......... You know, they won't be home tonight....." Classic!

I wished they had used the Theremin some more, though.
