From their website (http://www.sataniquesambatrio.com.br/imperialist_pigs/index.htm) - Note the ironic "Imperialists Pigs" when you click to see the english version of the page:
"Dear Gringos, Satanique Samba Trio is an ongoing research on the aesthetical deconstruction of Brazil’s most popular musical traditions." Is this the very first Rock in Opposition band of Brazil? I mean, genuinely brazilian in the sense that they are destroying, simply destroying every aspect of the music that all brazilian grow up listen to? In fact, when I was listening to their most recent sound (it seems to me that they improved themselves a lot, but I have to hear everything with more care) I ask myself if a non-brazilian could fully understand their message. "Cuicas", "panderos" and everything samba have to offer quite destroyed, but in a logical structure. Well I created this topic to discuss this with someone else, I need to know if I am getting too anxious or this is actually what it seems to be. |

Oh, and their live presentations also goes in a quite fun way: they dressed as this sort of monks, all in black, covering their faces, making the devil horns. Remind me of Spinal Tap.
Eventually I'll make a review for their albums. I must! |

Well, I like SST but I think they took the wrong train. Brazil's most popular musical traditions were ultimately totally destroyed by funk, sertanejo, axé, pagode and similar garbage. If they want to sound different they should try to 'reconstruct' these traditions. This would be a real opposition (rock or not) of what's being done presently here. |

I kinda agree with you...
There are some paradigms that were not attacked with quality. They were attacked "by below", in a vulgar manner, specially filling the needs of record companies or keeping certain social groups stigmatized with a certain "style" and "culture" - I guess this should be even a topic for brazilians to discuss. But back to the subject: To "reconstruct" traditional music in a progressive manner could be indeed something of a RIO style, but I think that this would be a different project, you know? I guess we should apreciate their effort, while we wait for another vision, another proposition towards music. In certain manner, I'am always waiting for the new Secos & Molhados... |

In a certain way, Milton Nascimento and people from the Clube da Esquina 'reconstructed' Brasilian folk music, blending it with rock, jazz, latin, barroque and some of our deepest roots. Actually, I believe that Milton is a real Progressive artist.
On the other hand, I'm waiting for a new Novos Baianos.

Not being Brazilian I can't commit on all these things.
But from an American's perspective, they are pretty awesome. The Brazilian touches certainly give them an unique edge (with regards to my listening habits).

Well, if the sound can be internationally understood... they succeded.
I'am curious to see what path they will follow in the next years. The group already have 10 years! |

I think you can delete the repeated posts by yourself... well, I could do it in the past but I'm toothless now. BTW, I like your avatar!

Thanks! Take me long to decide what image was a good one... I was in doubt of using or Henry Cow or the hammer and sickle of Area' Arbeit Macht Frei. I like them equal, but Henry Cow won.
And now I have a signature - also take a long time to decide. |

By the way, if someone is still interested: I email the band (yes, I did!), and the leader of the band answer me in a most gentle manner.
He says that he did not know the RIO movement (but said he would check) and that there is a track by Satanique Samba Trio that is "didatic" (this one:https://soundcloud.com/satanique-samba-trio/cliches-04-21-23). What they are fighting is the protocols and "cliches" that made good music just simple music, in his own words - the protocols that did not allow samba and other styles to evolve. I think the track above, even for those not familiarized with Brazilian popular music exemplifies what I said. |
