has anyone here listened to this band? I heard a few songs and they definitely sound prog to me, they draw alot of influences from The Mars Volta

They are somewhat prog, but I'd call them prog-related at most.

I'm listening to their album Doppelgänger right now, and I must say
that I'm positive to this suggestion. They would fit well in Prog
Related.

Yeah they aren't a bad band...but I don't really think they're "prog". Just...their scene denies this. Their music is complex and fun to listen to though (minus some of the clean vocal spots). Their older stuff especially (musically) has ties with TMV (musically). Like I said, not a bad band...but not exactly "prog" in mine. Perhaps, as Plileas suggested, prog related...

I have the original album and two songs from Doppelgaenger, and their style seems somewhat experimental. They're probably closest to Prog Related though.

Samples. One complete track, downloadable for free, and a streamable 30 second clip from another track. I strongly recommend hearing their album Doppelgänger in its entirety though. Edited by Philéas - March 15 2007 at 11:43 |

Check out the latest album Manipulator aswell. More retro sound and a bit Proggier than Doppelgänger.

^I heard some of their new song on the TV while my brother was watching MTV2 or something and it sounded really cacophonic and sloppy.

Good band but not really proggy enough for inclusion.I see people suggesting Prog Related but let's try to add bands to that category that are a little more essential to prog than TFOT.

^Not at all. Between the Buried and Me is certainly progressive. They are more talented, creative and varied, and they also happen to write better songs. If you listen to Alaska and notice besides how complicated the material is, the dynamics of songs like "Selkies" and "Backwards Marathon" and the experiments like "Laser Speed," how are they not proggy enough?
I must be honest though, they write great riffs...I just really have difficulty getting into the vocals in general. Even some of the melodies seem a little poor. I'm listening to clips of the new album; doesn't sound much different, but not bad. Edited by Moatilliatta - May 21 2007 at 21:36 |

meh... i listened to the newest album. It wasn't awful, just so damn trendy. It really came across to me as nothing more than an emo band with chops.

I wasn't saying that BtBaM were not Proggy enough. What I meant was that compared to what I've heard by BtBaM, my opinion is that TFoT are at least Prog enough to make the Prog Related category. GoldenSpiral: Was their latest the first you heard by them? Give them one more chance and try Doppelgänger. Some prefer that one. |
