I vote for the third, unless you really think you need the ruggedized external. Best bang for the buck.

That's true.
I love the noise of a fan. My current external drive is an internal drive in a caddy case and has a fan... except my mother knocked the drive down the back of the old desktop PC and it's never run properly since... well, the fan I mean, it makes horrid noises like a cat throwing up. So I think I may get a proper external drive. I don't know if I have Firewire or not but I do have USB. |

Well I have USB 2.0 slots, so all is good.

Excellent.
One stupid n00by question though: will it require mains power? My external drive I have currently does and it's a pain 'cause I've used all the slots on the extension lead up so I cannot use it without unplugging something... and as the Fridge, portable 'phone and my laptop are all plugged in, it doesn't make it easy. Plus the cable length is stupidly short. |

External 3.5" drives take a lot of power and cannot be powered by the USB port - smaller (2.5" or 1.8" drives) can be powered from the USB, but one of mine frequently trips the USB port and is not recommended.
If you get a unit without a fan - don't leave it on for more than a few hours a day - they die from heat exhaustion very quickly.

Cool, it looks like I'm going to get that Big Disk Extreme+ Triple.  Now 1 or 2 Tbs? 2 Tbs is a lot, even for me. And yes, I usually store my music (which I've burned from CD, naturally  ) on the external drive, as well as install files and documents, so it's likely be turned on most of the time.Dean, do you recommend LaCie or would you recommend any other maker? Any thoughts are welcome. |

I've had good luck with LaCie in the past, I think they're as good as any.
I also think 1 TB will be plenty. |

If you're happy to spend the money, then it's great - there are less-expensive drives in aluminium cases with temp-controlled fans - I have a Freecom one - it works and hasn't failed yet. As with all things - buy the biggest one your budget will run to - because even if you don't need it now, you will.
You don't "need" RAID 0 - it is not strictly a RAID drive (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Discs) as it is neither an array nor does it have any inherent redundancy - RAID 0 splits the data equally over two discs to improve performance - it actually halves reliability and if one disc dies all data is lost. For streaming MP3's the performance improvement of RAID 0 over a normal disc is unnecessary.

It would probably allow you set up a RAID0 over either Firewire or USB 2.0, but in any case it's a.) a feature you can safely ignore and b.) as Dean pointed out, not a very good idea to begin with. |

I looked at the datasheet for the third option and the whole RAID thing is confusing, you were right in that it looks like it only applies to FireWire 800 (which you probably won't use), and in any case it's completely internal and transparent - no configuration needed on your end. I still think the third option is your best bet. Just forget about all the RAID talk, I don't think it will apply. The second option is for people that need security - you don't need to encrypt your MP3s, do you? |
