Considering I wasn't alive for the death of John Lennon, the departure of Peter Gabriel, and many other sad moments of music, they don't have as much of an effect on me. Did you ever perhaps consider that?  Also, this is the first time a major member left one of my favourite bands (again, whilst I was alive I mean). But who cares, I'm fine with it now. Like Snow Dog, I'm thinking positive right now. |
Yes I did when you clarified the point later but your original posts suggests this is worse than the deaths of Lennon, Holly, Hendrix etc which is obviously not what you meant so I apologise. I am a fan of DT, I was just trying to put some perspective on this, that's all.

the whole world is in a permanent change .. why should DT be an exception? with 'Falling Into Infinity' they put me on the train into the new prog millenium ... thank you so much Mike  all the best for his new projects ...

Well, it's quite unexpected, and a bit of a shock.
I'm glad he still will be involved in Transatlantic, but this is a hard time for the DT fans.

Some of us have lived through Gabriel leaving Genesis and Anderson/Wakeman leaving Yes. Now that's serious stuff. |
I care more about Dream Theater than Yes, or even Genesis. Also keep in mind that Dream Theater was one of the first bands I ever got into. I spent weeks figuring out Dream Theater songs on keyboards... Mike Portnoy even inspired me to start taking drum lessons! He's one of my heroes, and hearing that he's leaving his band that he's been in for 25 years is devastating for me. If you aren't a Dream Theater fan, then this isn't a big deal for you. But for a kid who's been following Dream Theater and Mike Portnoy since he was only 9 or 10 years old, this is more than a big deal.

that's the same way with me. I'm a drummer, and have been since I was maybe 7 years old. I got into Dream Theater (and henceforth Prog Rock/Metal in general) when I was around 9 or 10 years old. He's my drumming "idol," and to see that hes leaving my favorite band, basically of ever, it's pretty harsh

Well it was a bit of surprise but not shocking. The guy has a full schedule and after 20 years of working in this format he needed a break. The real surprise for me was the rest of the band didn't want to let him take a break and basically said your in or your out. They will find another drummer then the real fun will begin here. 
I actually never saw Dream Theater never had a desire too but I am thankful for the tours where they highlighted new and upcoming prog and prog metal bands giving them exposure they would never had without it. I thanked him for that ion person at the Transatlantic concert I saw. Funny I have seen him in LTE and TA but not DT. I have seen Jordan Rudess twice as well in LTE and RMP but not in DT. Would love to have seen Jordan play with the Dixie Dregs.

Well, as long as I have been defending Mikes decisions with my heart, you know, all the control of him in the band, it was more than evident that the band needed to change direction and I wouldn't think on a better decision from him.
It's a little inmature of him pretending that Transatlantic or A7X is more important than DT, I think the rest of the band did a good decision. How can you explain to a legion of fans that they will have a "hiatus" because Portnoy has more important things to do? put it on perspective, for everyone else in the band DT was the center and you see Labrie putting out a new album or Rudess recording a new one, but never taking time away from DT because that is the band, the center and the key of all their success.
Mike is a freeman and I doubt he would go back to the band, but well, miracles happen all the time and maybe a year or two free of DT will make him get it and maybe go back in his decision. I'm sad because he was and is the master, maybe the most important drummer in the last 20 years, he is well known even outside of prog rock, but well, I'm expecting that DT go back to their bands day, more than their Portnoy days. More room for Labrie and Myung will be fine, I think it's needed. Of course, the next drummer maybe will have the standard way too hard but it will be interesting...
DT will survive...

the first time I read it... I was like... F***!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOW IS IT POSSIBLE... Then I calmed down and thought about it... he was leaning to Avenged Sevenfold... but to leave the band he helped create...

I had always found Dream Theater held Portnoy back with another element in the band that is not lacking in his other projects. That element either held him back or boxed in his playing...which sounded predictable and formulaic. I could never take that other element seriously. It belonged in a band like Skid Row or Warrant. You know..."tracksuit metal". That element belongs somewhere in between Penetanguishine and Martyrs Shrine....certainly not in Dream Theater. If that element were a perpetual May 18, 1998...things may have been different to thy ears.
There's a more important question here. What will Mike do with that honkin' Dream Theater tattoo on his arm? Artist submissions are welcome.  |
