I'm sorry, I'm quite late with the voting, in fact dead last . . In order to not hinder the procedure even more I will now post my votes and comment later.

George's choices

A fine selection indeed, including a band that I was considering for your previous poll. Dengue Fever made me think of Kikagaku Moyo at the time. So, from the start it was quite clear to me where my higher points would go to. S.G. Goodman was a strong contender in almost equl measure. I like the singer-songwriter style of music very much. And Goodman has it all, a beautiful and expressive voice, great lyrics and a classic yet fresh-sounding style! I enjoyed the other two tracks as well, esp. We Broke the Weather because of their unexpected changes of pace and tone but the first two remain my favourites.

5pts Kikagaku Moyo

3pts S.G. Goodman

2pts we broke the weather

1pt   Spooky Cool

Kees' choices

It’s quite impressive how much creativity there is in such a small country like Belgium. Yôkaï proves this once again.  A sombre atmospheric track that could be easily part of a film score for a thriller, musically multi-layered with influences of jazz, psych-rock and retro electronic music styles. – Mondkopf’s track is not unlike the former, but I would definitely classify their style as electronic music, comparable to some extent to some German electronic music acts such as Modeselektor and the cinematic epic style of French electronic group M83. Although musical diversity is an important criterion for me, I would like to give my higher points to these two tracks, because I find them more convincing, musically, although I really enjoyed Lisa LeBlanc's quite refreshing and creative musical style.

5pts Yôkaï

3pts Mondkopf

2pts Lisa LeBlanc

1pt   Big Big Train

Nick's choices

Cola de Zorro. It's the first time I’ve had the opportunity to listen to a Latin American band, from the field of progressive rock and related genres, at least consciously. So, I listened a bit more closely to this piece. Musically we are on rockier territories here. Their style sounds relatively classical, I couldn’t percieve any Latin American sounds, but their music is quite rhythmical and melodious, which could perhaps be explained by the band's cultural background. The album title ‘El Desierto Avanza’ which translates to ‘The Desert Advances’ might provide more information in this regard. Anyway, I like what I hear, and this band is therefore a contender for my higher points.

Mario Lino Stancati’s world of sound, on the other hand is in complete contrast to this. He creates an epic, dark and mysterious soundscape of minimalistic electronic music, which I can imagine as a soundtrack for a David Lynch type of movie. I’m not a fan of scary movies but I’m quite into avant-garde and experimental music and this one is top notch imo.

5pts Cola de Zorro

3pts Mario Lino Stancati

2pts Kalandra

1pt   Boris

Christian's choices

Red Snapper. I enjoyed this fusion of jazz, funk and electronic sounds very much. Acid jazz is a musical style that emerged back in the 90’s but it sounds still groovy and intoxicating, esp. in the experimental style of Red Snapper. – Lucy recalls the 90s once again, but this time it is the vibe of the legendary 90s Berlin techno scene. - I also enjoyed Laura Veirs’ artistic folk-rock style a lot but since we rarely get to hear any dance/danceable music here, I decided to push forward the first two tracks. – As for So Ser, as you know I have always an open ear for experimental music but this one was unfortunately less convincing to me.

5pts Red Snapper

3pts Lucy

2pts Laura Veirs

1pt   So Sner

Nickie's, Greg's and Lorenzo's choices: See previous page.

_______________

George, I've updated the spreadsheet. Thanks a lot for both, the speadsheet and the playlist!

Not quite dead last. I still need to give my points for Christian and Lorenzo.
I was in the middle of listening to Lorenzo’s choices when I found out about the death of a friend, and I have to admit that threw me a little (understatement). I don’t think I’ll get it done now today, as my mind won’t settle. I’ll try again, tomorrow..,

What a sad day, Nick! I'm sorry to hear about your loss. It will take time to get over this. I lost a friend last month, I still can't believe it. Talking about it with a mutual friend has helped me a bit. Stay strong and best wishes, Nick!

Nick: Very nice selection for my tastes. The Boris one is well done and I get its appeal but it doesn't click with me at first listen (I'd like to hear other things done with a voice like that). The other three are great and hard to rank. Cola de Zorro's old school Tortoise style post rock may not be the most original but I'm a sucker for stuff like this, I really love it. Kalandra's one is very atmospheric, for once something like this comes in a less than 3 minutes dose. Mario Lino Stancati makes me want to listen to the whole album but I suspect this track works better surrounded by its album rather than as a standalone.

The reactions to the Boris track don’t surprise me at all. I kind of expected it would be a miss. To be honest, it’s not a favourite of mine on the album it comes from, and seems almost to have been deliberately conceived as a single. I chose it because, as a single, it had a video for the song. It is probably the most uncharacteristic Boris song, even in a long and large discography that has covered a very broad range of styles and sounds. Anyone vaguely familiar with Boris (but not entirely familiar) might be excused for questioning if it even were Boris! 😜

The track comes from W, which is a companion/sequel to the previous album NO. Together, they make NOW, and they are very much a yin and yang. I love Boris for the way they have experimented so much over the years. They are, for me, one of the most progressive bands around, and it’s almost bewildering, to me, that they are not in PA. Prog as £&*@! 😜

Similarly, if I were to choose a track from Cola de Zorro, it would not have been Tanu - which is probably my least favourite track on the album. But, again, it was the single and the one that had an accompanying video. My favourite track from the album is probably Circulo:

And, unsurprisingly, the same can be said for Mario Lino Stancati and Kalandra. In every case, I chose a track not because it was a particular favourite, but because it had an accompanying video. Both Mario Lino Stancati and Kalandra really need to be listened to as an album, as out of the context of surrounding pieces, they are less impressive (though still enjoyable).

Lorenzo: A good melody well done can give me pleasure even if it's San Remo/Grand Prix Eurovision style. Wheater a melody works for me though is pretty unpredictable. Achille Lauro does nothing for me and Irama very little. On the other hand Elisa's song makes a good listen for me and Mahmood & Blanco do that plus this has some originality... also liked Mahmood's earlier Grand Prix entry so it seems the guy has some Lewian-affine magic. Don't ask why.
5 Mahmood & Blanco
3 Elisa
2 Irama

Cola de Zorro’s album translates more appropriately as “The Desert Advances”, or to keep with your “moves on”, perhaps “moves onwards”. Only a slight difference, I realise, but with particular meaning. The band has stated that the album is a direct response to the drought and water crisis in Chile, and that the desert is, indeed, advancing - and claiming more and more of the country, and encroaching settled areas.

There is not so much Latin influence on this album as previous ones, and though the band hasn’t said as much, I wonder if it is because they have attempted to make an album that is more “international” because the water crisis and drought in Chile is not an isolated problem. Climate change has meant that throughout the world, we are experiencing vast changes in our landscape.

Here is my review, which is largely my own inferences, rather than anything the band has said. For me, the album was like a soundtrack to Steinbeck’s “Grapes of Wrath”.

https://theprogressiveaspect.net/blog/2022/08/17/cola-de-zorro-el-desierto-avanza/

Regarding Mario Lino Stancati, I had never heard of him before listening to a compilation based on the works of HP Lovecraft. I don’t really watch horror films, and never have. For me, horror is all in the imagination, and what I can imagine is more horrifying than anything I might see on the screen. I used to devour horror novels and short stories from about the age of 10 to when I was around 20, and I love to listen to dark ambient and/or avant “horror music”. I loved the idea that Eighth Tower Records was releasing a book of short stories, accompanied by a soundtrack. I have three of their book/cd combos now (and have reviewed two for TPA).

https://theprogressiveaspect.net/blog/2021/12/11/various-artists-va-the-beyond-music-inspired-by-the-lucio-fulci-death-trilogy/

Because Mario Lino Stancati impressed me so much on the Fulci compilation, I ended up buying the first Portraits compilation (and had to review that, too, because it was too impressive not to).

@Nick and Mila: sorry to hear of the loss of your respective friends.
@Mila: thanks for your comments; always appreciated.

If Nick is up to it to finalize his point distribution, we may advance on this poll. Lorenzo indicated he's not able to listen to YT-videos before September, so I think we should not wait for that. We could maybe start a new poll next week-end or early next week?

Lorenzo’s picks

I listened to them all, or at least all I was able to see. I have to admit that almost every one of Lorenzo’s initial four were more impressive than the new four. The lone exception was The Boss, whom I’ve never really had much of an affection for. I do like the odd tune of his, so thought maybe this might be one to join that small number, but it was not to be. He’s a great songwriter, and perhaps it’s his delivery that doesn’t quite gel with me, as I can’t recall a single cover version of one of his songs that I don’t like.

I would normally comment more, but I’m not really feeling it. This is through no fault of Lorenzo’s, but rather the bad news that seems to keep rolling in to my life. If Kees hadn’t made the above post, I might not even have managed to post this. My head and my heart just aren’t really into it.

(Leading pack)

Vinicio Capossela, Bestiario d'amore

Francesco Guccini. Natale a Pavana

Paolo Conte, El Greco

(Chasing Pack)

Achille Lauro, Domenica (five points)

Irama, Ovunque sarai (three points)

Elisa, O Forse sei tu (two points)

Lo Stato Sociale, Combat pop

(Out of contention)

Bruce Springsteen, Song tò Orphans

Mahmoud & Blanco, Brividi (one point)

Only one track falls below The Boss in my affections, and it’s poor Mahmoud & Bianco - which was actually interesting instrumentally, but vocally put me right off. It has that auto tune sound that I have never enjoyed. Ugh! 🥴🤢🤮

[EDIT] to add:

Christian’s picks

There’s very little between the top three of these, and I could probably order them differently on a different day. The only clear ranking is Laura Veirs, who just didn’t grab me the way the others did.

Of the two more industrial tracks, I think I do prefer So Sner over Lucy, so it’s really only where to place the weird and wonderful Red Snapper.

So I guess I’ll go for:

So Sner, Animals Will Help (five points)

Red Snapper, Tarzan (three points)

Lucy, Wanton Witch 2 (two points)

Laura Veirs, Seaside Haiku (one point)

@Nick, thank you for your review on 'El Desierto Avanza', very interesting indeed! I somehow thought that a literal translation of the album title couldn't be right. I’m glad you corrected me. I will definitely explore more of Cola de Zorro’s music.

I think that this symbiosis of literature and music is a great idea, both from the artistic point of view and in terms of a new marketing strategy, which makes sense to me, esp. nowadays when hardly anybody reads books and record sales have collapsed. Recently I came across such a soundtrack for a thriller (again) by a well-known German writer. He collaborated with various musicians who wrote songs specifically for that soundtrack.- Thanks also for the Stancati related articles! They will take some more time to read but I will keep them in mind.

Thanks to all, it was interesting to read your reactions to the Sanremo songs I have chosen. Good experiment
