That sounds good, especially if all your favourites are allmost equal to you. And sorry for misunderstanding.

I might have the impression that (not-Progressive) Psych isn't that popular among PA members. What would you say?

If my recent Psychedelic Rock poll was anything to go by, you may well be right, seeing as you & I were the only two who voted in the poll

what is not-progressive psych? Late 60s psych was an influence on prog, so I don't know what you're trying to say.

I distinguish between Psychedelic Rock (not least second half of the 60's) and Psychedelic Prog, being for instance: Pink Floyd (UK) : The Dark Side Of the Moon (1973) Boredoms (J) : Vision Creation Newsun (1999) (alt. Krautrock) Hawkwind (UK) : Space Ritual (1973) Oceansize (UK) : Effloresce (2003) Kingston Wall (Fin) : II (1993) Eloy (D) : Ocean (1977) Nektar (UK) : A Tab In The Ocean (1972) Steve Hillage (UK) : Fish Rising (1975) Manfred Mann’s Earth Band (UK) : Solar Fire (1973) Älgarnas Trädgård (S) : Framtiden är ett svävande skepp... (1972) (alt. Folk-Rock) Gila (D) : Gila (1971) (alt. Krautrock) Edited by David_D - November 28 2021 at 11:31 |

60's Psych was not only an influence on Prog but the very source Prog evolved from.

Right, when we not only talk about Symphonic but other sub-genres, as well, like for instance Folk-Rock and Jazz-Rock - but I'd say Psychedelic Rock was the main source as Symphonic Prog must be regarded as the main sub-genre, at least historically speaking.

Yes, but that was to large degree some more obscure bands so, I think my Psych thread will be a better indicator - when people have the opportunity to mention their own favourites. Popularity of this channel is another better indicator - the best one, I guess. Not many have listed their favourite bands, but it has had quite many views, I'd say.

There's also a clear difference for me between Psychedelic Rock and Space Rock, even though they're both lumped together as one interchangeable genre here at ProgArchives.

I guess, I agree in that, as well, even I didn't distinguish between them in my examples.

Them started off as a Garage Rock band in 1965, led by Van Morrison, but have a listen to the 1968 album below, which sounds so psychedelic that it glows in ultra-violet light.

So 6 albums later after Van is long gone they do a psych pop lp and that makes 'Them' a Brit psych band..? Come on Paul...you can do better than that. |

^ Time Out! Time in for Them is a full-on Psychedelic Rock album, and if you're still in any doubt, have a listen to this fuzz-toned freak-out....
Their previous album "Now and Them" was heavy on the psychedelic too.

Hi, If you get to see the Rockpalast DVD, you will find real quick that it was not about "psychedelic" as it was about being meaningful. That DVD shows the intelligence better than the albums did, which were sort of put together to "shock" and get attention ... what band did not do that in those days? But by the time you hear OORA and BANDAGES, you can see that there is no psychedelic edge, but an intelligent edge that is very different from most rock bands. I don't think that most folks will check this, but when you hear things like some of the moments in OORA, you go ... wow ... what did he say? Very literate, and not just a simple line to show off this or that. At that point, what we "call psych" is more about the interpretation of the words in music, instead of using lyrics to do so, and I'm not sure that folks in this era of PA and Progressive, can see the value and importance of it. Or the difference!

Hi, You know ... if you really want to learn about "psychedelic" and crazy in every sense, you really should get the two CD's of music CARL STALLING material ... which is far out but strange when you hear it and you don't see the cartoon and your mind struggles for images ... but it is a heck of a fun listen, and quite psychedelic to the point that I might even suggest a ..... this and that ... so that your "mind" will not interfere with the music at hand. Let's just say that it makes FAUST sound like, and look like, a bunch of young kids getting their diapers wet! And then some!
