Virginia Astley - From Gardens Where We Feel Secure

Beautiful ambient prog. Eno-esque in places.
The album is a concept upon a summers day.
A unique album and very overlooked talent.Check out her other releases.Wonderful!

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

I have two recommendations. Definitely, you should check out Birds and Buildings and their album "Bantam to Behemoth". It's great. Besides, if you are into jazz, Tord Gustavson Trio and their 3 albums.

2009 RECOMMENDATIONS!!

CHEER-ACCIDENT "Fear Draws Misfortune"  -  Lovely album from a very veteran band: this one shows that the peculiar USA trend of R.I.O. remains a very fruitful field for the creation and construction of terrific weird ideas not devoid of excitement and freshness.

FLOR DE LOTO "Mundos Bizarros"  -  Third release by this band, which shows them reinforcing the contrast between their electric and acoustic sides, and that means that the rock element is more powerful than ever. Also, the compositions tend to be more twisted and sophisticated.

GARGAMEL "Descending"  -  Not a descent but an ascension toward the road of maturity, this sophomore release finds gargamel expanding their nuclear sound by making it tighter and more eclectic, especially regarding the addition of space-rock and kraturock-ish overtones to most of the album's tracks.

KOTEBEL "Ouroboros"  -  Awesome!, mindblowing!, a masterpiece! Kotebel delivers a solid opus where the symphonic prog genre is creatively refurbished into the sort of adventurous eclecticism that the band has so cleverly delivered for the last 10 years.

RETSAM SURIV "Exégesys"  -  Not ground breaking but creative and exciting anyway, this Argentinean band's debut album states a vibrant symphonic prog sound with noticeable prog-metal and spacey undertones, plus some playful slight touches of jazz-rock that add to the overall dynamics.

        Kind regards!!!

More people, who are into Zeuhl-type prog, NEED to discover UNIVERSAL TOTEM ORCHESTRA.

I highly agree with you, on both counts.  Clap

Also, I really need to check out Kotebel - Ouroboros!!!

Long time no posting in my thread, so here's one:

miRthkon - Vehicle (2009, Altr0ck)

http://www.myspace.com/mirthkon

http://www.mirthkon.com/

Get cd here:
http://www.waysidemusic.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=33/ALTROCK%20009

Their Myspace bio:
- - - - - -
miRthkon, under the lead of guitarist Wally Scharold, bombards the interested listener with a happy mix of well done, off-beat, aggressive and dry guitar riffs with complex, unusual compositions which are decorated with seemingly labyrinthine woodwind lines (mostly saxophones, but also clarinets) - it's a true joy. Sometimes it sounds like a less hectic and less traversed version of Dr. Nerve, sometimes one can hear through the twisted melody lines the good old, late Frank Zappa (although updated with very heavy guitars), especially in the melodic, polyphonic, and playful 'Daddylonglegz'. German listeners will be reminded of the more off-beat moments of Panzerballet, where the funkiness and more offensive jazziness are replaced with reminiscences of the RIO school (a bit of jazz rock is present here and there with miRthkon, although with more edge and sneer).

It sounds weird, and it is. But still it is not repelling or cold, but to the contrary through a casually ironic style and the fresh combination of diverse musical elements are quite attractive and despite all the musical roughness it is not harsh. Fine, very fine.

The biggest flaw of 'The Illusion of Joy" is the fact that this EP plays pretty short (it is, by the way, offered in a very nice DigiPak, and the price is lowered too). Should this EP sell well miRthkon has announced that they will again publish earlier out-of-print recordings (those are, however, more solo projects of Scharold and less a product of the band). I really hope this is going to happen. Even more I wish they would work on a real LP of the present band because their music is most exciting. More of this!!!

Er... I'm not really recommending anything new or special, but I'm looking for comments on my first review... I did not find a proper thread for this but since I "indirectly recommend" the album, I put it here. So, if somebody would comment, I would be very happy...

Songs for adults - Nimby
Well Nimby consists of Games Grigsby, Dave Kerman, Bob Drake and Jerry Wheeler. What those RIO heros do here is perform short songs by Games Grigsby.
Great songs, that maybe inspired from Tom Waits, or Zappa, I'm not sure.
This is not a RIO album, just great songs with versus-couros, etc. Performed in minimalistic instrumental arrangements that contain also Trombone.

About being adult I guess.

There are more details and a short sample at Bob Drake site, here:

I just heard of this Austrailian band called Karnivool, and they sound pretty good from what I've heard so far!

You can definitely detect a huge Tool influence in their music, so people who are not fans of Tool should be advised!

Yes, I heard them on The Dividing Line Broadcast Network first. I am currently absorbing them into my cranium. Very promising on the heavy almost metal side of Prog. They need to be included here.
