It's strange:
22 nominations, but the discussion is missing (even for my fault)

I guess it may be time to vote Lorenzo and discuss our choices and why we chose them. Is it time to vote soon? Weekend it nearly here and hopefully we will all have some time to go through every nominated song.
I made a playlist with all the songs, wow! ... this is going to be a difficult choice ![]() Edited by tigerfeet - May 19 2021 at 21:20 |

I've had a busy work week and have gone through about half the nominated songs. Some weeks that means I've been through most, but 22(!) songs is a lot. I'll be voting (and possibly commenting) over the weekend.

I've been able to do my initial comments on all, have relistened and sorted once, now to go through the A-List and determine which 3 of those are top 3, and order. This is the hardest part for me, although it takes longer to make the comments, which, for those who are new, is not a requirement, just a personal choice. As per usual, really, really hard to decide.

OK, I'll take the first leap. Truly my 1st and 2nd actually are tied, but I went with Lorenzo for first place this time, because I love the electric guitar hints that show up, so very tasteful. Also, sometimes the vehemence of the Italian vocals don't work for me, here is a softer side that I found so plaintive and heart-melting, that I haven't often heard in Lorenzo's choices. Kees, that music piece is also very moving, in a very different way, and as you probably know, I love Spanish/Latin/Mexican-flavoured music very much. Also, I loved the idea of noting the blue of flames, usually fire is described as being red, but truly, there are many colours in fire, also fitting as this film was about visual artists. Nick, I also enjoy a bit of space-type hypnotic music from time to time and this one just made it over the top of the ones who became honorable mentions, as I was able to completely lose myself into the piece. I also would have considered Five the Hierophant, had you chosen them. I am considering purchasing the recording that came from.
Thanks to all who brought so much more new music for me to hear...also thanks, as always, to these poll's creator, Lorenzo; and the poll theme master and playlist curator, George.
1.
Lorenzo: Lalli “I Fuochi”
Spare piano begins the piece, with an imploring sort of female
vocal. Echo-y voices in background,
sounds like they were recorded in a church, perhaps. I can’t find the lyrics in English, but her
voice is so terribly evocative of sadness.
She reaches some really beautiful depths in her tone. Very soul-wrenching. Electric band comes in about halfway in and
her pace also picks up. She sounds like
she is coming to some resolve to me, despite what sounds like an anguishing
situation, but I’m just guessing. Her
voice comes in, in an echo-y sense, is she haunting herself with whatever
happened? I like this very much, very
emotional piece. Honourable Mentions (these were under serious consideration and truly ended up here because competition was so stiff) This was the longest "A List," and ending "Honourable Mentions," yet for me, not to mention the "If You'd Selected," list):
Raff: Manuel de Falla “Ritual Fire Dance” Logan: Harumi “Fire By The River” Mike: Gotye “Smoke & Mirrors” wiz_d_kidd: RÊVE “Moths” Scott: The Winery Dogs “Fire” If you’d Chosen Differently (these would have been up for second listen, possibly have competed for Top 3 and/or Honourable Mentions: George: Type O Negative “Summer Breeze/Set Me On Fire” A Crimson Mellotron: Audioslave “Original Fire” Cristi: Pro Musica “Poarta de foc” Tancos: Sister Irene O’ Connor “Fire” Tigerfeet: Tindersticks “This Fire of Autumn” Edited by Snicolette - May 21 2021 at 12:04 |

I've cast my votes, I believe it was implied that it is OK to vote, as George mentions he will try to vote over the weekend.

Banco de Gaia – Burn the Witch Begins with some drums and the apparent sound of people partying. Electronic sounds enter the soundscape. Then a drumbeat. I really like the drumming style. I also like that we get 14/4 (as in 4/4 + 4/4 + 6/4). Later it turns into a regular 4/4 beat. A speaking voice appears, but I don't get all the words. The track is pretty dark overall. I really like it. Boston – Smokin’ Straight forward rock and roll. Well sung and performed, but not particularly original I'd say. I quite like the Jon Lord-style keyboards after the second verse. Nice vocal harmonies too. But all in all that type of rock doesn't normally do it for me. |

1. Reve - Moths I loved the positive space created by the intro of the song, the vocals are very dreamy and quite modern sounding, in regard to the style of singing, but still mixed with the feel of a kind of indie rock ballad. I got the feeling it was the dance of a moth too close to a flame, and certainly something to do with relationships and emotions. I especially loved the string and cello part, again mixed into a kind of indie rock ballad, it felt it was leading me somewhere and I was happy to go along with the flow. I chose it as #1 as I am very much into this kind of music recently, maybe just being nostalgic to want to hear 80s, 90s indie style rock bands but with a modern take. I had never heard of Reve before and I have been listening to the album today (La Marionatte). 2. Lalli – I Fuochi The first thing I wrote down on first listen was... Wow! I always enjoy a song in a language that befits emotion perfectly. The light dance of the piano keys and delicate and vulnerable vocals. I had a feeling that the song would evolve and at around 2:30 it totally evolved and how unexpectedly. Now we have the guitars come in and the whole vibe of the song has change and become more confident and resolved. Great vocals and an immersive song. Again, new to me and led me to listen to some other tracks which were all admirable. 3. Mikko Joensuu – House of Fire Something I always enjoy is an intro to a song that draws me in closer and closer to the song. Somehow this song made me know I would enjoy the whole track immensely. Perhaps paying some homage to Mike Oldfield who did the very same thing in many of his songs. Here the song evolves and becomes more meaty and with potential for excitement. The synth, and beat, the drums, the effects and ambiance - all now become a journey to the unknown. I really did feel like I was travelling somewhere and the song was telling me a story as we went along. Then a nice transition period in the middle of the song, something that Floyd always loved to do back in the Saucer/Ummaguma days. Then back on the train to ride out the remainder of the journey and then we are left to contemplate for quite some time at the end of the track. And yet again, I had not heard of this artist before, and have been enjoying some of his other work this evening. 4th and 5th place Close 4th and 5th were 4th - Scriabin/Horowitz – Vers la flamme / and 5th - Igor Stravinsky – Feu d'Artifice - Incredible. Both of these tracks were very much out of my comfort zone but after appreciating both numerous times I just could not place them lower than 4th or 5th. In fact Scriabin/Horowitz – Vers la flamme was at one point in 3rd place. Non-chosen nominations that were too good to not be mentioned Snicolette's early choice of Sifting Ashes by Stoning Giants really touched me. Unfortunately, we have had so many large destructive and deadly fires over the past 10 years here in the west. We had a lot of survivors who moved to southern Oregon after the Camp Fire and then it happened again to a few of them just last year in the Almeda Fire which pretty much took out the town of Phoenix, Oregon. https://ktvl.com/news/local/two-time-fire-survivor-talks-camp-fire-and-almeda-similarities This was a very difficult poll but at the same time so rewarding. Once again I get
to explore music I either just do not listen to usually, or just haven't been
bothered to explore. I chose my own nomination for the very same reason. Thanks to all Edited by tigerfeet - May 21 2021 at 19:05 |
