Holy crap, anyone else here heard Kevin Hufnagel's (dysrhythmia) new acoustic project? The compositions remind me a bit of the amazingly complex polyrhythms that Robert Fripp forged with his "League of Crafty Guitarists".

Songs for the Disappeared is excellent, and a pleasant surprise. It's a nice departure from his other music.
Can't wait to hear him in the newly reformed Gorguts myself.

Obscura is pretty sick, I just don't like the vocals. :\
I listen to a lot of the Faceless, Spawn of Possession, and the such.
Waiting on the new Born of Osiris album right now. :)

If you could get only one I would suggest their album Two Hunters.

two hunters i would suggest. most progessive to date , although other 2 albums are worth listening , Diadem Of 12 Stars is great Black metal album, surely not straight forward black, it has it's prog elements .

Well, I'm a rather avid fan of the tech/ extreme metal genre as well as experimental/ post metal. But since it seems like this thread is strictly about tech/ extreme metal thread, I'll go ahead and post rather amazing tech/ extreme album that I have been listening to lately.
Ved Buens Ende's Written in Waters: This is such an interesting forgotten masterpiece of avant-garde metal. They only released one album together like many other bands and it is their only masterpiece. Its dark, gloomy, rather sludgey and the crooning vocals aalong with the walls of interesting guitar sounds really make this album cohesive in my opinion. If I could, I would buy a copy of the physical album. If you have never ever heard of them, I highly recommend this album and band to whoever likes the slower, gloomier and perhaps more abstract side of the tech/ extreme metal. >:{D < id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall;" id="jsProxy" =""> |

I listened to Fortress with a buddy yesterday, he loved it and I must say I enjoyed it even more than the first five or six times I listened, might even bump-up my rating from 3 to 4 stars

Fortress is a pretty detailed album, more so than the in face sound of it suggests. Having listened to it at least 100 times over the last 12 months, I have to say it's a spectacular album. You can hear how hungry the band members are, I love how inspired the album comes across as a result.

I just checked and there are already two no votes for Obscura so I find it highly unlikely they will be added.

I don't understand why. They're almost dead-on prog metal. The technical compositions, fretless bass noodling, acoustic parts, some clean vocals, etc.

The PMT distinguish between technical metal and technical progressive metal and I guess Planky and Harry which are the two no votes feel that Obscura belong to the first catagory. Personally I think they are borderline progressive and I suggested them because I felt I needed other opinions to decide if they would fit into PA. A difficult case this one but a highly recommendable album nevertheless.
