Since that is the second Coltrane recommendation I have got in the last 24 hours, I am doing so. On a related note, I just listened to the first two tracks of Bitches Brew today. It is hard to listen to the whole thing in the car, with so many starts and stops and pausing and all that.

I'm listening to it right now. And yes, I am quite aware that you are listening to the Zeuhl band Magma, hailing from Kobaļa.

This John Coltrane stuff is good, especially the sax player. What is his name? LOL

I just started Faust's IV, then after that is probably Pat Metheny's The Way Up.

It is always amazing to hear how effortless John McLaughlin's playing sounds.

If you outright don't like free jazz at all you might not want to get it. Unless you're feeling adventurous. Wink

However, if there was an album to change your mind about the genre...this may be it.
Oh shoot, I had completely forgotten about that, I really need to get that. I don't have any of his albums yet, but I was listening to him on Ruckus and Wadada is amazing. Free jazz is possibly the best genre ever. <3

Sleeper, you should listen to Okkyung Lee's album, it's pretty great. Of course, I'm a little biased because I saw her live at The Stone, but it has some incredible free cello. I wish she hadn't given two of the tracks over to Ikue Mori though, I wasn't expecting the album to be so atmospheric. While this type of playing is only a small part of the album, if you like this I think you'll like the whole album.

I've only got a little bit of beer left right now, a bit of Rum and a lot of wine and Sangria. I need to stock up again.

BUT THEN YOU HAVE TO COME OVER AND DRINK, DAMMIT!

Monday night. Do it. It's on.

That is a great video, I like the cello up close with the white background. very mesmerizing. Although that might be my sleep deprivation talking.

She plays with a lot of energy live (although the fashionista boots she was wearing detracted a little bit from the experience), but the problem was that it was all of those sounds and no melodies. I like free improv, but you can't make scritchy sounds for an hour and expect it to not run together. It sounded like she was doing the same things over and over, and maybe she was. John Zorn had the same problem.
