I was a bit disappointed with Fortress, but there's not way I couldnt have been given the godly opinion I have of Kezia.
|
No, it's not.
You were disappointed with Fortress? Hmm, when I heard Sequoia Throne I was floored by it, and then when I bought the album on release day I was completely happy with it, but over time I guess it started to lose some of its glory. Kezia is definitely more emotionally powerful, so I think I ended up preferring it slightly, but I didn't find Fortress to be at all disappointing. I get what you're saying, though.

Well by disappointing I mean 4 stars, but like you said Kezia just had so much more emotion. I don't know whether it draws from the concept or just the writing itself. Also I liked the use of female vocals and acoustic moments on Kezia that were missing on Fortress.
Disappointed, but nowhere close to thinking it wasn't a great album.

Haha, you really liked it? Hmmm, I'm not sure whether that means I should try it again or you're just strange.

A Calculated Use of Sound is a post hardcore album really, and I'm really into post hardcore anyway, so I enjoyed it. Obviously you wouldn't suggest it for someone looking for a progressive record because the band wasn't doing that style back then anyway, but for post hardcore, it's not bad I guess.

So I went to see The Faceless, Cynic, and Meshuggah. All three bands
were amazing especially Cynic and Meshuggah. I actually enjoyed Cynics
performance the most because they were MUCH more interactive with the
audience. Meshuggah was absolutely mind blowing, don't get me wrong,
but I prefer bands that like to play/talk/joke with the audience, reply
to what we say, etc. Meshuggah seemed a bit stand-off-ish in general. I
saw Thomas Haake three times before the show and all three times he
never responded to my greetings. I talked and joked with Sean from
Cynic for a while, he was a really cool guy. I was right on the
barricade for Meshuggah and a person away from it during Cynic/The
Faceless. Where I was was the best place in the venue for Meshuggah. I
was in between Fredrik and Jens so both were directly in front of me
(or over me rather) a few times. Also both Dick and Marten came over
and were directly in front of me too. I gave my business card to a
roadie who said that he for sure could give it to Fredrik for me. I
didn't even bother advertising for Cynic or The Faceless because their
artworks are at a much higher level than my own. Meshuggah is about the
same though IMO.
After the show, I walked out and I saw a man. When I saw this man, I
thought to myself, "Wait is that Gene Hoglan... nah can't be." I went
closer and holy f**k it was him! I introduced myself, shook his hand,
gave him my business card, and then took my picture with him (It'll be
emailed to me.) It was so amazing! And so random!
Oh and I ran into a client of mine who I met at an Opeth show. I've
randomly met him like 4 times at various gigs. I think he's stalking
me...

Pretty awesome. I can imagine Sean being a great guy to talk to.

That's currently how I feel about Cynic, actually.
It's clear to me that they are masterful, but for some reason, they haven't clicked with me yet. Must be another band that has to grow on me like PoS did. |
I'm exactly the same with Cynic too, Focus impressed but ultimately bored me and all the self-involved lyrics were a bit much.. must say I much prefer Hero

I am going to see the Cynic/Meshuggah/The Faceless show this next weekend- Valentine's Day to be exact!
You know it's love when it's a Cynic show! I hope to get lots of pictures!

Well I finally broke down and ordered "Traced in Air" and it just came in the mail yesterday. I had been trying to buy it at a record store so I wouldn't have to wait for it or pay shipping, but I finally decided to screw it.
I don't know what to think of it to tell the truth. It's very interesting, but the songs are rather similar. Nothing like I've ever heard before.

I don't know if you were referring to Arizona, but it is most definetely not symmetric. Try Wyoming or Colorado. Bands frequent the latter more than Phoenix as far as I know, so Colorado has Arizona beat, in terms of tour frequency and geometric symmetricity.

But that would mean Toby Driver was wrong. But Toby can't be wrong. Clearly we have a contradiction here.

Hmm. Maybe your friend Toby should take it up with my friends from Tool, because they probably misinformed him when they talked about California flooding, possibly resulting in a symmetrical Arizona.
Either way, none of the best tours go through Phoenix or Tucson. When they do, it's usually during the weekday when I'm in school, rather than on a weekend or during the summer. And I probably didn't mention that I live about 4 hours from either of those cities, so getting down and up for a show is pretty hard.

I have to say, I actually enjoyed Traced In Air from the very first listen, quite a lot. Did you give that album a go yet, or have you only heard Focus so far?
