I took a break from PA for a few months towards the end of last year, but this was the thread I missed the most. Without it, I may have stayed away. Smile

Forgive me if I missed your post, but what are your favorite albums and songs? Have you seen them live yet?

Talking about Brave last night prompted me to grab it for the car this morning. Sometimes it's like I'm hearing it fresh for the first time. Those final 15 minutes are simply stunning.

Well, as for Tom's problem. Brave, I have to admit, is one of the worst records to be listening to in the car due to all the volume changes and the subtle style Marillion always incorporate in their music. He should really just listen to it in bed one time (same goes for Radiation or, actually, for any other Marillion record).

Fish's solo career has been excellent - and just as in the case of Steve Hackett and Genesis whose split gave us TWO fantastic collections of music - instead of one, Fish and Marillion have done the same - two great collections of music...

I totally agree with 'Brave' being as good a concept album as any ever been made and 'Marbles' surely must rate as one of the stand-out albums in the whole history of Prog. The live version of 'Invisible Man' (on the 'Marbles on the Road' DVD) gives me goose bumps - on my goose bumps! This song, in my opinion, is second only to Rachel's Birthday - "Nightingale and the Snake" as the Ultimate in Prog music.
Well, I feel a bit like I'm Spuit elf as we'd say in Dutch, but: Welcome to the Marillion thread and to PA in general! I hope you'll enjoy yourself, of which I have a hard time seeing why you shouldn't!Wink

Brave's album liner says it all - play it loud with the lights out.

Eric is of course, as ever, absolutely spot on. That final 15 minutes is simply stunning and emotionally draining.

And you know, I've yet to do this (play it loud with the lights off). I may set aside some time this weekend to do just that. As much as I love it now, I'm afraid listening to it in this fashion will just send me over the edge.

It really is the best thing Marillion have ever recorded (IMHO).

Lazland and Basileia

Thanks for making me feel welcome in the 'Marillion/Hogarth appreciation society' - which is what this forum is becoming...

My favourite Marillion music.......heck = ALL of it!

It would be easier to list the (few) songs I can't get into - but that would just be too negative and there is NOTHING negative about this band in my opinion.

Listen to ANY Marillion track enough times and it WILL grow on you.

While I am here I would also like to express my appreciation of an influenced-by-Marillion (and vastly underrated) band = Grey Lady Down - just to test reaction...?

Thanks Geoff. Time is always short on a Friday for me (it's going out to booze nightBig smile), so I'll give this a listen over the weekend and report back.

As you're probably all aware by now Marillion are back in the studio writing a new album which is set for release in 2011.

We are going to try our best to keep you up to date with their progress this year. Many of you enjoyed the Racket TV episodes that were available on YouTube etc and we have decided to carry on with these broadcasts throughout the year.

We will also be sending out Ewebs and messages via Twitter.com, Facebook, MySpace and ILike.com so make sure you subscribe to these if you want to be the first to know our news!

The first episode of Racket TV 2010 will be an interview with the band and this is where we need your help.

Please could you email us any questions you have for the band - it can be anything you've always wanted to know, questions about the new album, touring plans past and future, what's the band's favourite song - let your imaginations run wild!

Please email your questions, along with your name and your country of residence (sorry but no anonymous questions will be submitted). We will then interview and film the band and if you're lucky your question will be read out and answered to the whole world.

Please email [email protected].

We look forward to hearing from you

Best wishes

The Racket Records Team

Posted by Lucy on MOLF:

OK - I thought I would give you all an update on our plans for the release of the Convention 2009 CD's and DVD's. Obviously all these plans are subject to change!

The Saturday night and Sunday night audio from Holland are almost finished so we hope to be able to put these on sale as both CD's and downloads within the next few weeks. These will become catalogue items at Racket Records.

The 3 nights on DVD from Holland should be ready to be released sometime in April in a lovely box set and surround sound. This will become a catalogue item at Racket Records. We will hopefully sell this in both Pal and NTSC

Mike will start on the Montreal audio soon and we hope that by the summer we should have a limited edition release of both the CD's and DVD's from this event. We will print a limited number of these CD's and DVD's and once they are gone they will be gone. The DVD will be NTSC only.

Hope this answers all your questions!

Lucy
x

P.S Bloody hell they sound and look fantastic! I bought a tear to my eye!

================================================================================

I'll be ordering all of it, too. Montreal will be special to see again, but I want to take in the Holland convention, too. Compare/contrast, you know.

awesome, except that now I have to choose between the montreal and holland DVDs!   want to chime in welcoming Geoff.  Still hoping to make it to the next convention as I[ve only seen H era on DVD.  this is the only thread I visit anymore but even if you don't see me post and much conversation passes without my getting to comment on it.

Marillion with Fish was a great band, I saw them live in 1983.  I loved them and in hindsight I think we all know that he is just not the singer H is.  His range. inflection in voice and most of all authenticity pale in comparision to H.  Not slanderous as noone else does either.  Fish is a character in a drama while H is baring his soul.  Like I say I love Fish, I still listen to early Marillion at times.

Not that my opinion matters anymore than anyone elses, just that now that we have a bunch of H fans on this thread now,  I can say all this without being a trollWink

Kenmar, luckily, I think they're going to be staggered out a bit, so you won't have to buy the whole lot at once.

Man, I remember Fish vs. Hogarth debates were always taboo on the old Opium Den discussion board. It's a natural comparison and shouldn't be suppressed, IMO. I think Trewavas, Kelly, Rothery and Mosley were wanting to go in a completely different direction. From what I can surmise, Fish held them back. You get Hogarth, who not only has a great voice, but brought them another musician with which to work. And you have to hand it to them for not acquiring a Fish clone. They had to be sick of all the Peter Gabriel/Genesis comparisons and completely reinvented themselves. And we're the better for it. Do you really believe Marillion would've made it past another album or two beyond Clutching At Straws? The sessions were wrought with infighting, and drove Rothers and Fish to the point of physically beating the other one down. It just wasn't healthy.

Lastly, I do enjoy solo Fish (and 13th Star could be his finest), but I have found post-Fish Marillion to be much more interesting than his solo material. Especially considering the last decade gave us 3 brilliant albums in Anoraknophobia, Marbles, Happiness Is The Road. Hell, I'd even throw Somewhere Else in there. Many people hated it, but I love it.

OK, that being said, first round is on me in Holland!!!

E

Eric,

Yes it is nice to be able to have the Fish/H discussion without the drama.  I agree,  Fish couldn't have brought much more than the meloncholy of a depressed drinker.  I think his solo career would have been much better if he could have pulled his life together.  On the other hand, H brings the full range of human emotion,  from the flght away from reality hoping of Fantastic Place to the embracing of Life in Essence and everything between.  When H acts out a drama, as he does in so many songs,  it's more like he is embodying the character,  feeling their emotion and tapping into their life story, as a result these songs come to life.  the stories draw me in.  Fish was a brilliant lyrisist,  how can you not love " oral contraceptive aborting pregnant conversation".  the poetry has technique and cleverness, but not the ability to draw you into the story.

Hindsight is 20/20, so I don't fault Fish, but I argree with you that they couldn't have done much more with him.

I assume you'll post as soon as you hear anything about tickets for the next convention.
I don't know how many more there will be, I need to be there.

I'll definitely be ordering the Holland weekend, no doubt! Not too sure about the Montreal one; need to see how I'm going for cash when that comes around, but I'll probably get it eventually

Last night I was thinking the exact same thing to myself! And I definitely agree that they couldn't have gone much further with Fish at the helm than they did. It was definitely healthier that they did break off though; instead of having two post-CaS Marillion albums, we have a load of Marillion albums and all of Fish's solo stuff, so I'm not complaining

Marillion at the "High Voltage" Festival ...now that's a bonus - but surely they should be Headlining it?

Still, I guess ELP are not too shabby... will be good to see the old coddgers again - Bought my ticket already!

I think that their slot on the High Voltage lineup is just about right, and it will certainly massively bring up their profile to a great many people who still assume it's all about Kayleigh and a tall Scottish man.

Great thread! Misplaced Childhood is my all-time fave, followed closely by Clutching at Straws. From the Hogarth era, it's probably Season's End, as "Easter" contains my all-time favorite guitar solo. Brave is simply genius throughout, as is Marbles.

For anyone interested, I had the privilege of attending Steve Rothery's guitar clinic in New York, on Saturday, January 30. There's a nice blog post on it at www.guitarinstructor.com/blog.
