Lemme see. If we ignore '60s pop record ITCOTCK ;) based on release date we can get KC from 70 - 74 (with a '75 posthumous USA classic  live record). As KC went into hibernation Rush emerged.

Hemispheres, A Farewell to Kings and 2112 are the Rush classics to end the 1970s. Poseidon, Red, Larks Tongues, Starless And Bible Black are The KC classics released just as Rush arrived.. I know Lizard is unique and I like it it is a one off idea that is more experimental as Fripp tries to organize KC into something resembling a working band. Poseidon finishes the train of thought begun with ITCOTCK, Islands is a bit like Lizard as a working ideal, shame it resulted in the awful sounding Earthbound. Rush take the honours in concert releases here, but archive releases re-write (re-right?) KC's live era with a more positive epitaph.

KC get the vote here but I'm damned if I'll do without them great Rush albums, Fly By Night is quite a good set of pieces. Caress of Steel is very ambitious but needed that sense of structure that extended works like The Necromancer needed. This turned up with 2112 to the extent I kind of wished it was a 40 minute long concept.

Rush is a good hard rock album, but it's the last works taking the honours with KC possibly getting their considerable musical nose in front.

King Crimson because of In the Court of the Crimson King, or else it would have been Rush.
When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.

Just about decided on King Crimson, but if their debut wasn't there it could have gone either way Smile

The debut was an odd thing that I still only listen to more for historical reasons than for enjoyment, and it was indeed in 69. It was made stranger still by In The Wake... I don't like Islands. Lizard, Larks Tongues, and Starless are magnificent. On the basis of those albums I voted Crimson. It was a good period for Rush too, certainly.

Yes but the poll creator said it was included and the album is a masterpiece. Wink

Rush by many a mile.

I simply adore their stuff from 2112- Hemispheres (which they managed to surpass with their next 2 releases - IMHO)

Crimson - I will never understand their popularity. They are clearly loved by most of the prog community - I just don't know why -  I've tried listening to different KC albums but finally just gave up.

Brilliantly innovative and never content to rest on their laurels. You should listen to their live material.

When I say I don't get KC it is with no sense of joy. I feel like I am missing out on something but I can't force myself to like something that I don't enjoy. However, I understand what you mean when you talk about them being a band always trying to move forward. But they are just not for me.

Still, I love some frowned upon albums like: Topographic Oceans, A Passion Play, Platinum & Breathless - it keeps things interesting when we like different things!

King Crimson. Was never much of a Rush fan.

The poll creator did indeed include In the Court in the original post for some reason, or aare you referring to the calling it a masterpiece bit?  Diff'rent Strokes for different folks, I guess. ;)

You called?

That's King Crimson for you though. They were the hardest band for me to get into in the prog world.

Without the debut from King Crimson - Rush win out for me. It's down to LTIA, Starless and Bible Black and the glorious Red against 2112, Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres. Those last two swing it for me.

Permanent Waves was released on January 14, 1980. It was written completely in the 70s so it could have been included in this poll. Not sure that would have change the results all that much though.

I'm a huge Rush fan and am only now really exploring KC. I didn't vote, although KC could never mean as much to me as Rush does.
