I prefer ATTWT to Duke - mainly for Banks’ keyboards. He still had his ARP, Hammond, Mellotron etc. By Duke, he utilised a bunch of newer synths and keyboards, drastically changing the ‘old’ familiar sound of the band. I think he used his Hammond T one last time on Dukes’ Travels though.

I like Duke a lot.  I think some people look at it as the beginning of their more pop era & but it still has some great stuff on it.

I recall hearing Duke when it first came out in 1980 - it was a mate's copy. I liked it then and still do now.

Hi,

Strange that you would say that when you well know that by that time I was a lot more into the European Music and that a lot of the English stuff was over rated and full of blarney!

I prefer ATTWT too, but would award it only 4 stars, if trying to be objective. Duke is a more focused and solid album, even if, for personal and sentimental reasons I prefer a number of the songs on ATTWT. On Duke they found their feet as trio, on its predecessor they were still trying to figure it out.

If that makes sense.

Agreed. My favourite Genesis is from 1978-83, actually, then the Gabriel and Hackett period.

I think Heathaze is underrated. Very interesting composition if you analyze the chord sequences in the verses, and great bass playing. Please Don't Ask and (especially) Alone Tonight I'm not quite so keen on. I liked Misunderstanding when I was younger but it's a little underwhelming now. Turn It On Again, on the other hand, is their best pop single ever (yes, better that I Know What I Like, much as I like that track too) in my opinion. What other hit can you name in 13:8 time? Again, chord progressions on that one are superb. Rest of the tracks are also bangers. Man of Our Times sounds awesome, but could have been part of a longer, cooler song if it they weren't going in a simpler direction.

Good post!  I do as well...on ATTWT, Banks started to transition to the new "Poly Moog" synth, which was a rather remarkable polyphonic beast that was quite the rage back then.  It had a portamento-pedal that you can hear him use on songs like "Snowbound," where he swells the orchestra patches in a lovely chordal manner.

I saw that tour, and Daryl Stuermer was amazing!  I only wish they had made him a full member of the band....he was much better than Rutherford on 6 string.  Oh well.

As far as Duke goes, I'll listen to it again, it has been ages.  As I recall, some of it was convincingly good, some of it was only "meh."

I agree about Turn it on Again. It's my favourite Genesis HIT single overall, from any period. It's shame that Misunderstanding was on the same album, as that ranks as their worst, alongside Illegal Alien and I Can't Dance. Misunderstanding was inspired by Toto's Hold the Line, and Sly & Family Stone's 'Hot fun in the summertime' both of which are immeasurably superior songs.

Man of our Times is a great Rutherford track, I agree and also agree it could have been developed a little more, but it's one of those wonderful 'play loud' songs! Cul-de Sac is also classic Collins era Genesis, and wonderful Banks songwriting. Overall this album has some brilliant highs, and some tragic and ill positioned lows.

Heathaze is another Banks classic, perhaps the Burning Rope for this album, although IMO not quite up to that standard.

Duke's Travels is my fave song on the album. Totally. I love that reprise of "Guide Vocal".

What about Dodo/Lurker, Home by the Sea, Mama, Domino, the Brazilian, Driving the Last Spike, Fading Lights and most stuff on CAS? (and some stuff I've probably missed out?)

Heathaze is a grand composition. It always feels like it ends too soon.
And I don’t know why, but Please Don’t Ask moves me for some reason. Beautiful song. There is a lot to enjoy on Duke. I’ve had my LP for more than 30 years, listened to it a lot, and it’s still a beaut copy.
