Thanks Steve. It was a lot of fun putting that together. I desperately wanted to do something a little bit different. Every site and magazine does a best of list, and I genuinely would have struggled to differentiate between a top five in 2022, which was a cracking year for music. BTW, I fully expect Mr Anderson to retain his title in 2023

Tonight's two album reviews are very good examples of why I set my little website at www.lazland.org up just over twelve months ago now. Neither artist are on Prog Archives (inexplicably really) and under the somewhat arcane rules here, I would have had to have waited until the additions to set out my thoughts. Oh, how blessed is freedom! Seriously, I think the site owner & admins really do need to move this site forward and tweak the rules a bit.
Anyhow, they are Wedingoth, a French band, with their fourth release, Five Stars Above, and Polish artist (of Amarok) Michal Wojtas with his stunning album, Lore. Video of the Week is a live performance of Easter by Marillion & Friends from the Orchestra - what else in this most special of weeks? There is a rather nice English bitter appearing as Ale of the Week as well. All of the above can be viewed simply by clicking on the buttons at my homepage. What the dickens are you all waiting for?

inexplicably? There is a simple explanation: these artists were never suggested. Suggest them, see what happens. It's easy to throw stones. And even if an artist has been rejected before, they will be re-evaluated if they released new music.

I don't have time, old chap. Too busy combining my website, which involves a lot of listening to undertake reviews, work, keeping the house, caring responsibilities, and downing a few ales. Perhaps when I retire, I might have time to devote to PA more than I do. However, what I will say is this. Readers of my website might want to suggest artists they see on my site for inclusion here. Without wishing to be drawn into an extended debate or argument, I feel that as a reviewing resource, PA is hugely behind other sites with its suggestion and additions policy.

We all have work, a house and responsibilities... I felt your post like an unnecessary reproach. You know how things work (suggestions, evaluations and so on). The suggestion and addition policy is simple and fine. I've seen worse, much worse. |

Tonight's update is a review of the Jerry Cutillo project, Oscillation
Alkemy Kreativity (O.A.K.), latest release Lucid Dreaming & the Spectre of Nikola Tesla. It is a fine album, and my review includes music from it. Enjoy.
Video of the Week is a live rendition of The First Rebreather by BBT, a version which gives me hope for the future of this great band. Both can be found on the homepage at www.lazland.org

Hi Steve,
Thanks for posting First Rebreather by BBT. I like that Alberto Bravin is not a D. Longdon clone, which would have been an insult to David and cheapened the music for me. Some artists can not be replaced. I look at it now as when Fish left Marillion and H. stepped in. A different journey that was glorious on many occasions. I'm sure the same is in store for BBT. I hope that fans keep both the faith and an open mind, and let the new edition of BBT grow and prosper.

Thanks, Steve. Yes, you are absolutely right. It has to be a new chapter and Bravin is clearly a talented singer. Sometimes new singers can go wrong. I thought Benoit David did a good job on FFH with Yes, and I think that Davidson has not been positive at all. Not because he isn’t Anderson, but because I don’t think he is suited to this at all. The example of Marillion is a fine one. H has been magnificent, in a way that Mendel never could have been with IQ. Horses for courses, I suppose, but I for one, and I know you are the same, will keep an open mind re BBT. All of them, especially the memory of David, deserve that much.

Tonight's new review is the debut album by Dutch outfit, The One entitled Sunrise. A good album influenced by classic prog without being derivative.
The video of the week is by Massimo Pieretti, performing to a select live audience excerpts from his album, A New Beginning, a review of which will be published hopefully tomorrow evening. There is also a new ale to "sample" on the Ale of the Week section of the site. As ever, simply go to the homepage at www.lazland.org and click on the relevant button.

I just listened to the new Tull and stopped after track 5. I thought that the Zealot Gene held a lot of promise and I was really giving Ian the benefit, especially as I felt that he made a major effort to fit his wrecked voice in with the music. However Rokflote is promises broken. There is no getting around the vocals this time and there's a lot more of them to boot. *sigh* On the upside, Ian is a shoe in for another of Lazland's Broken Vocals Of The Year Award. Speaking of, I'm off to the land of Laz now with a cup of my favorite. Cheers.

Funnily enough, Steve, I have been sent an original album by a Tull Tribute band in the UK by the name of Cold Flame. I quite like it after a couple of listens, but need more in order to form a proper reviewing opinion. I intend to link it with Rokflote which I have not had the time to even listen to once as yet - hopefully, tomorrow afternoon. However, even without the first listen, Ladbrokes the Bookies in the UK have installed Anderson for the coveted award to speak of!
Update this evening will be a particularly fine Italian album. Thanks, as ever, for your support of the site.

As mentioned above, I have posted a review of a really good album by Massimo Pieretti, an Italian musician & composer, which features amongst its many guests Ray Weston of Echolyn & Kate Nord. Really good stuff, and I think that admirers of Tony Banks solo output and the melodic side of progressive music especially might find a great deal to enjoy here.
As ever, link to the review is on the homepage. It is a busy time here in Lazland, and we have music reviews of artists from Finland, England, Israel, and Canada waiting in the wings to present to you in the forthcoming few days.

It is a triple header of reviews on www.lazland.org this evening. Indeed, even more excitingly, we have a double-header within a triple-header, which should certainly excite all mathematicians of the academic variety, if nobody else (you know who you are!).
There is a review of the wonderful Israeli artist, Aviram Tzur, whose Moving Aloud is simply superb. The double-header is Tull related. A review of the real thing, and a very good cover band, Cold Flame, who have released a new album of original material. Is RökFlöte any better than The Zealot Gene? Could it possibly be any worse? What about a cover band? Can they produce an album of original material which stands up to the "parent band"? You can only find out by clicking on the buttons on my homepage. The Video of the Week is Tull.

Cheers, Steve. Yes, an interesting trio of albums, and the two lesser known ones were by far the most interesting. Tzur is a real find and has been suggested for addition here in PA, but I need to find out how that is going. Cold Flame are a tremendous band and deserve far more exposure. There is worldwide stuff in the Lazland queue - too much music, and too little time. I need to retire! When I do, I might just persuade the wife to fly over and we will have those ales!!!!

We are on a creative roll here in Lazland - so much music, and tonight I present a review of Finnish outfit Nerve End and their debut long player, The Cycle.
For those of you who love the heavier end of the progressive spectrum, you will find much to like in this.

It is another extremely busy week here at www.lazland.org
Two reviews this evening (more to follow as the week progresses, with some instrumental prog and folk rock to come) and they are the superb debut album by Ruby Dawn, Beyond Tomorrow, and an interesting EP by a new psych duo from Canada, namely Space Kitchen. Video of the week is a track performed live from the new album by Dutch outfit, Hackberry - a review of the album will follow later this week. There is also an ale of the week, a Cornish delight. As ever, all of this can be viewed by clicking on the extraordinarily sexy button links on the homepage. As ever, I am grateful to all forum readers for your support - the way this website has increased in visits has astounded me.

Bad news on this front, Steve. The Crossover team have rejected Tzur for inclusion here as he is "not prog enough", apparently. Further comment from me is probably not going to be conducive to my good relations with the collabs here
