Duel of the Seven Tigers

Rather good exhibition-style martial arts flick with plenty of different forms, lots of action, excellent fight choreography, and a top-shelf cast of China's finest Wushu practitioners.   Thin on plot & logic, heavy on gongfu, Duel of the Seven Tigers is exactly the kind of Saturday matinee that gave kids something to do and wayward adults something to aspire to.

"Ganja and Hess" 1973.  9/10
Masterpiece of Black cinema.  Poetic , vampiric addiction extended metaphor. Intelligent. Unexpected, resplendent cinematography. African psychedelic soundtrack.

Shaolin Ex-Monk

Hilarious kungfu romp with great high-kicker Joun Liu in one of his comic roles as a renegade monk on a criminal spree.  When the Shaolin send Master Ling Chu-fei to stop him, it ends in an epic duel.

The Unbeatable Dragon

Two gongfu disciples try to stop the malicious General Pu from destroying their Shaolin temple, training each other for the fateful confrontation.  Well produced action, mediocre martial arts, high-end for 1978.

Black Adam
Comic Book / Action
Dwayne Johnson, Pierce Brosnan
3/10

Another DC disaster. Terrible writting, horrendous editing, just an absolute mess.
I watched the first half hour or so one night, and it seemed mediocre, but I figured I'd watch the rest the next night. I almost turned it off after the next 30 minutes as the whole affair just seemed to fall apart.
It's no wonder James Gunn and Peter Safran are torching the pretty much the whole DC thing and starting over.
Don't waste your time on this turd.

^ I like Dwayne Johnson but wheeling in Pierce Brosnan as, presumably, a baddie always looked suspect and a bit desperate. Thanks for the heads up.

Don't get me wrong, I have no doubt there will be those who love it, just not this guy.

And to be fair Pierce Brosnan is not truly a bad guy per se. Rather, a good guy put in a bad situation. That being said...IMHO he seemed out of place in the roll, although I'm totally unfamiliar with ANY of the characters.

Smile. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt15474916/ There hasn't been a decent horror movie for ages. In fact the last one I recall is an excellent low budget movie called It Follows https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3235888/ from 2014. So after some great trailers for Smile I had high hopes. Unfortunately, despite being well produced and acted it failed to deliver a decent horror story. It starts out well and shows potential but then it just drifts along to an unsatisfactory conclusion. Early on I was thinking 'there's an easy solution to all this women's problems', but no it frustrates when it should be thrilling. A shame 5/10

I enjoyed Barbarian. Stars Bill Skarsgard and Georgina Campbell as 2 complete strangers who seemingly through no fault of their own double book AirB&B, and worse still, in a very run down area of Detroit. Literally they are sharing the only inhabited house for miles. Yes I think I know where this is going but then it veers off on a completely different course to what I expected. Enjoyed it a lot as it had plenty of detail and just about the right amount of gore not to mention one of the most cringeworthy scenes you will likely see. Admittedly it's very far fetched but I felt there was just enough detail to make it plausible. 7/10

The Lost City
A sort of homage to B Movies of the past where the poster is way more interesting than the actual film. Channing Tatum is largely wasted but still very good, Sandra Bullock is way to old for this sort of thing while Daniel Radcliffe plays a very lame baddy for a bit of light relief 5/10

The Banshees of Inisherin
Set in 1923 on a small island off the coast of Ireland, this period drama is about 2 friends reaching a certain point in their lives and taking stock. Colin Farrell plays a nice but dull character who is happy with his life with his animals and living with his sister. Brendan Gleeson's character on the other hand is seriously depressed about not leaving a legacy before be dies and no longer wants to hang out with Farrell's dullard as he perceives he is dragging him back. It's about the importance of love, friendship and commitment in small communities. Enjoyable if a little sad. 7/10

One for the 'holidays'

Zulu 1964
The epic British film favourite and perhaps the only sixties hit film from these shores. This is very much a patriotic old school boys own stuff retelling of the famous battle of Rorkes Drift in the Natal province of South Africa back in the 1870's. Barely 200 men held a mission hospital and outpost against 5000 Zulu warriors. Its well worth reading up on this even if only just on Wiki.
The film has been beautifully restored and looks great even on my very mediocre wide screen TV. The battle scenes are not entirely convincing with quite a lot of very theatrical style deaths. Not exactly hyper realistic but there is a certain charm. Features Michael Caine's first significant role as a high ranking officer. Stanley Baker plays the officer in command who in own words ' I only came here to build a bridge'. Lots of memorable lines in this film including a sick officer telling Private Hook ' I'll make a soldier of you yet lad' and the Swedish missionary Witt as he leaves 'Don't you know you're all going to die!' 8/10

The Menu 2023
Stars Ralph Fiennes as the head chef at one of those very exclusive high end restaurants that is so exclusive it's on an island. Ana Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult play 2 of the several guests who are in for a few shocks and surprises. Its a mixture of black comedy and horror that mostly misses the target. On paper a great idea but in reality it's all just a bit lame. 5/10

^ Coincidently I hadn't really heard of Ana Taylor-Joy until I very recently watched two movies in succession that featured her.

The Northman is a brutal and plodding film which to me almost seemed like an extended episode of the series "Vikings". It is well enough made and features a great cast including Willem Defoe, Nicole Kidman and Bjork but is ultimately a bit redundant. 5/10

Much more interesting to me was Last Night in Soho, psychological thriller come horror story with an intriguing premise that kept me engaged until the end. 8/10

M3gan (A robotics engineer at a toy company builds a life-like doll that begins to take on a life of its own). It's a movie about a robot doll that goes bad. It's dull and 'devil doll' films have been done better than this many times before. The effects are OK, but that's just about all that's in anyway memorable. In fact it's already erased from my memory. 2/10

^ Too bad, it looked kinda good.   Did you ever see Her with Joaquin Phoenix ?   It's kind of an un-Devil Doll movie, but more interesting.

Yes I've seen Her and I liked it a lot. Re M3gan, it appears the writer had a much more gory story, which was cut to make it a PG13. I think an R rating would have improved it immensely.

A couple of recent horror movies:

First Countdown from 2019 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10039344/. It's similar to Final Destination, but in this case our victims download an app called Countdown which tells the user when they will die (to the second). Not bad if it's 60 years, but more worrying when it's days or hours as befalls our subjects, with no way of stopping it (which they try to do of course). It's a short movie and quite well done as it could have been the normal crapfest; but this one raises it's head above the rest - slightly. 6.5/10.

Next up from 2022 is Barbarian https://www.imdb.com/title/tt15791034/. This is one of the better horror movies I've seen for a while. The IMDb trailer shows footage of real audiences reacting to the scares (like in The Brood in the late 1970s if anyone remembers that) and whilst there are some very well played out jump scenes it's the simplicity of the movie and the way it's executed that makes it so appealing to horror lovers. It's a no frills, in your face basic horror akin maybe to something like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Of course there are some daft moments, but these have to be there to keep the story moving along. Good stuff 8.5/10

This was just on TCM, so you might still be able to see it on-demand, but I recorded it, finally saw it, and it was really good.

Sharper 2023

starring Julianne Moore and Sebastian Stan this is billed as a mystery thriller. Cannot say that much about the plot without giving too much away but it's very slick production wise and avoids too much conjecture instead unravelling the plot across different timelines. It maybe falls down a bit at the end but mostly enjoyable and ideal for undemanding Friday night film watching. 7.5/10
