Deadly Mantis (aka Shaolin Mantis)

Featuring some of the poorest martial arts & worst acting in the Mandarin language, this farce should be avoided even by fans of the kungfu genre.

Ten Tigers from Kwangtung

Rivalries between the 'Canton Tigers' and the Shaolin flesh out this 1980 classic from writer/director Chang Cheh and the Shaw Brothers Studio.   High quality martial arts as Hong Kong kungfu flicks go, and a good cast & storyline.

Secret Kick of Death  [aka Magnificent Kick]

Based on the life of gongfu master Wong Fei Hung [played by the legendary Kwang Tak-hing] and his unstoppable invisible kicking skills, there is much beauty in this grainy old relic from '79 with its lion dancing and top notch martial arts choreography & performances.

we recently watched "Carol", a lesbian romance movie based on a semi-autobiographic novel by Patricia Highsmith. really great acting by the two main protagonists played by Cate Blanchett (Carol) and Rooney Mara (Therese). we have a kind of crush on this kind of movies (which is probably understandable), but this one really stood out. the final moment with the smile of Carol when Therese returns to her- she just slightly moved her lips upward - was just so very well nuanced. this was some exceptional acting from both. 10 out of 10

We saw this at the cinema, back in the day. If you enjoyed it, try to get to see his previous effort, Far From Heaven, with Julianne Moore from about 2002. You'll soon see the similarities... Smile

Edit: Oh, I guess you've both already seen 'Portrait Of A Lady On Fire'? (silly question, I know!) Embarrassed

Bandits of Shantung

One of the weirdest and darkest of the early wuxia ['martial hero'] films coming out of Hong Kong, Bandits of Shantung (1972) plays more like Spaghetti Western than it does Kung Fu spectacle, could easily pair with an Italian gunslinger flick at a Saturday matinee, and is part of a genre of low budget antihero movies that closely parallel the "Macaroni Westerns" of the 1960s and early '70s.   It also features one of the longest one-on-one fight scenes in martial arts cinema at over eight minutes.

Come Drink with Me

Hong Kong's 1966 entry for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars and featuring one of the first female martial heroes in film, Come Drink with Me stars Cheng Pei-pei as the sister of a kidnapped prince.   On par with most of the Hollywood productions of its time, it is a beautifully photographed period piece filled with great action and scenes of battle.

The Invincible Armour

The dazzling John Liu carries this straightforward revenge flick as he high-kicks his way through the gang that blames him for the murder of an elder.   When the Mings send their most skilled enforcer, Shen Yu, to hunt him down, Chow Lung Fu (Liu) teaches everyone a lesson in kung fu.   Liu's athleticism and spidery, long-legged kicking prowess is unequaled in Chinese film and here gives one his greatest performances.   Definitive wuxia from 1977.

Mantis Fists and Tiger Claws of Shaolin

John Cheung Ng Long is perfectly cast as a wandering loner searching for his long-lost sister who has been sold into slavery by an evil ruling clan.   When he confronts the clan and teaches them a lesson in kung fu fighting, they come after him, only to regret it.   The underrated Cheung does great work in this ideal wuxia cinema from 1977 .

The Babadook 2013

Creepy Australian film with some good moments but not one for those who prefer more up front gory stuff , this is more psychological drama involving a single Mum and her misbehaving 6 yrs old son. Good performances from the 2 main actors and an ending that makes you think a bit. 7/10

Bullet Train (2022)
Comedy / Action
7.0
Five assassins aboard a swiftly-moving bullet train find out that their missions have something in common.

A bit of fun popcorn movie that sort of falls apart in the last 15 minutes.

All The Old Knives (2022)
Mystery
6.5
Veteran CIA agent is sent to 'Close the Book' on a failed hostage event 8 years previous.

A character study of love, and betrayal. This is not a thriller / action film.

Thank you for supporting independently produced music

The Iron Monkey

Ancient period kung fu melodrama from '77 with lots of robes and spears and wigs and pottery and chopsticks and tea and fake beards... and Monkey Kungfu, of course.   Directed by and starring martial arts champion & Shaw Brothers property Chen Kuan-tai as the monkey master.

I think someone might have recommended this on the "Unique Non-English Language Movie" thread. Thanks!

The Lunchbox - 7/10
Saikh to me was the most interesting character, but he played 3rd banana. I didn't feel any romance. Partly because they didn't meet, and partly because it seemed like he was just a platonic pen-pal. Still a good movie.

CODA 2021

'Coda' stands for Children of Deaf Adults. This is the story of a young women wishing to pursue her ambition of going to music college. The only catch is that she is the only member of her family without hearing impairment and they need her to help with the family business. It's as predictable as the day is long and you know exactly what is going to happen but I cried quite a lot. Admittedly I am total sucker for this kind of thing with sentimentality not in short supply. 9/10

Top Gun: Maverick

Though clearly better than the original, which is to say it has an actual plot and characters who seem to impact each other, Maverick is what the first Top Gun was: a movie meant to appeal to as many people as possible.   To that end it succeeds, but not before we have to sit through the awkward romance, obligatory volleyball games, and one more cue reminding us of the 1986 version.   Not recommended in good conscience.

Hopefully I get some Kudos for watching a foreign language film (lol)

Argentina, 1985

Just released on Amazon , this is a dramatisation of the events surrounding a trial that took place of the military elite commanders (''The Junta'') who had run Argentina for a considerable time. This was near the beginning of democracy taking hold of this country with its very troubled past. If focuses on the chief prosecutor who doesn't even himself believe that a trial can be won. That is until the witness testimonies (well over 700 were given) of torture and brutal treatment come to light. If ever there was a film that was bang on the money in so many ways this is it. The 2 hrs 20 minutes flew past. Unusually its filmed in 4:3 aspect ratio but I didn't mind. Beautiful film making.10/10

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Nick Cage plays, well...Nick Cage in this movie about Nick Cage movies. The roles have dried up and Cage is considering retiring from acting but because he is in debt, he decides to take a well-paying gig to appear at a super fans birthday party, ostensibly so the super fan can show him a script he's written. So far so meta.

The first two thirds of the movie are fun but unfortunately the third act turns into a (poorly made) action movie and although it tries to redeem itself at the very end, by then it has sunk under the weight of its own cleverness.

6/10

"Lightyear"
I saw this movie last week while on vacation and was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it.  Forget the negative reviews from people who didn't see the move.  This is decent sci-fi entry. (as long as you remember that it's Pixar/Disney not Spielberg).

Buzz Lightyear in the space ranger suit sees the outer space on the right.
