That's a hot take indeed, I don't see how Gabriel is whinny though.  Confused

Jesus He Knows Me?! There are better songs than that during the trio years, I dare say even better songs on We Can't Dance. LOL

^ I've not listened to those releases in general, Genesis are not that interesting to me in general. Not my cup of tea.

I'll leave this here though as a nice distraction:

I know the Ghost cover. Quite good, I always thought a heavy version of this song would work.
I think a lot of Genesis pop songs would work with a metal "kick". Tongue

Like this metal cover (or is it?) of your favourite Genesis track, Who Dunnit? (luckily for you he left the lyrics out...). Tongue Wink

That's awful, also i don't think it's got anything to do with the Genesis song.

What I meant to say was that metal covers of pop songs are mostly fun to listen to, they often become catchy metal songs.
There is a metal tribute to ABBA everyone seems to enjoy.
Here are two examples. Big smile

ABBA goes doom-metal

'It' is the best song off of 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway'
The Wheel of Time Turns, and Ages come and pass. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the shadow.

That looks like a parody rather than a cover.

^ Visually it's a parody, musically it's a really good and authentic cover for the most part (Leo usually adds an experimental part about half-way through).

^ Their cover is great. Their self promo that follows is hilarious - it made me laugh!

^ Leo has done hundreds of metal covers, most of them for non-prog songs. Amazing musical ability, as well as video recording skills. He runs a studio in Norway.

Here's an interesting one, with a prog angle because it features Jųrgen Munkeby from Shining. A hot, avant-garde take on a Pop song ...

Probably not quite such a hot take as hardly anyone knows this, but if you listen to it you will disagree with me: Tongue

So the take is: Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy did extremely well with this one:

Hi,

This is really sad ... if you sit through Rachel Flowers doing this on the piano, you will find it to be one of the greatest piano concerts you ever heard. To top it off she also has an organ version, though I do not find it as good. I prefer to think that we here do not know what a piano concerto is!

At the time, if you took the score of "Tarkus" to a music professor at the university, you would get a low grade. I like to say that Keith merely updated it with "today's instruments" ... something Keith was very familiar with doing classical music a lot! Few folks, if any, EVER, understood that relationship!

You have nailed one of my pet hates on this forum, taking a comment out of context so it becomes meaningless. I was responding to another remark about Trilogy being their weakest album and so responded with brief descriptions for each album and a wider view that ELP were mainly only a prog band for the first 5 albums (not a hot take). So my comment was about the album not the track. The track is perfect but the album falls off the cliff. No one is disagreeing with me on that.

Hi,

I have to admit that I did not read what you are stating, but my apologies, you wrote it well and I failed to read it correctly. But I have to agree that the fun stuff added in the album, kinda took some of the air out of the sails for me. The band still did great stuff, but the fun/easy stuff was not what I wanted or needed.

With that said ... I think it's the same in a lot of "progressive" albums, specially in the past many years, where some parts are great and the rest is filler.

I'll listen to the album again, but I have never thought of anything ELP falling off their cliff until the time that they started really overdoing things ... but then, that is not exactly like saying that the other big 5 (or 6) did not have stuff that fell off the wagon, that was not ... filler! Or as you state, fall off the cliff!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Hot take: I find the use of Greek song titles and lyrics by the Chinese act Hoplites to be extremely forced. Kinda culturally insensitive even. :P I can get why artists are using English, cuz it's an international language or some bogus stuff like Kobaļan to add that "celestial" touch or something but the stunts Hoplites is doing feels kinda weird to me. YMMV

It's strange indeed, but I don't think it's inappropriate or "culturally insensitive". It seems the musician is fascinated by the Greek language and culture. So its admiration and appreciation in the end. It might fall on deaf years because of the use of vocals LOL, but that's another story. Big smile

Hot take: Cultural appropriation is actually not a problem, in fact a truly diverse society depends on it. We don't need a culture police.

Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward is a better singer than Ozzy Osbourne. Shocked

Relayer is a mess
If an album gives a "normal" person a headache, it will receive positive reviews on Prog Archives (see comment 1)
While I don't consider the Beatles to be a prog band, Sgt Pepper deserves a spot on the top 100 list.
How is it possible that "Wish You Were Here" is more highly rated than "Dark Side" or "The Wall"?
