KC is one of those bands I got into during a time when I didn't buy a lot of albums, either because of lack of funds, or other reasons. By the time I got into buying albums more regularly, I knew the KC discography, and never felt like picking any of the albums up.
Well, these new 40th Anniversary reissues that Steven Wilson did have kept me intrigued, and I'm now looking into getting some of them. But I haven't completely followed the news surrounding their release.
1st question is: Which one is the best one? 2nd question is: Are all 13 studio albums reissued? 3rd question is: Are the reissues significantly different that the older versions? If so, how dramatic are the differences? Will I miss the old versions if I get the new ones?

this definitely goes along with me and Yes. I only have 2 multi-disc compilation albums, but i want to have some of their studio albums. some of them are pricey indeed, but i havent found any from Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, etc. im interested in the 2003 reissued stuff of all the albums up to and including 90125 can someone lend me a hand on that one |
All of Yes' 70s albums, including Drama, are pretty cheap on Amazon. Tales is a little pricier, but not by much. I've seen Yes albums in FYE. I'm a little surprised you couldn't find any Yes in Best Buy (as crappy as their CD selection is).

I tend to buy the 30th anniversary ones because they're about £5 cheaper and I really prefer quantity to quality in albums. I'd probably get a little tired of the album if it took 2 or 3 times longer until I can buy the next one, but I would love to buy 40th anniversary's. You should get them if money's not a big issue for you.
Also, to answer the 3rd question, the quality isn't really incredibly different but it is a little better

FYE = For Your Entertainment. FYE is the music store chain owned by TransWorld. They also own Wherehouse.

Oh man. Your in for a treat. These 40th anniversary editions are so worth it, money and time wise.
My favourite is IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING.
An exceptional 2 disc set that has great demos and Rough takes on ' I talk to the wind' and moonchild. Really neat. And of couse an incredible 5.1 disc remastered by Wilson.
Other honorable mentions RED, ISLANDS, LIZARD and LARKS TOUGUES IN ASPIC.
having King Crimson in 5.1 audio surround sound is worth buying them enough!
Darkshade. It's a real treat. Highly worth it, but be prepared to pay 20$ or over for them. ;) |
Also..it's interesting to hear how instruments were increased in volume on the re-mixes of the 40th anniversary editions. Certain levels of instruments were also decreased in volume or even completely mixed out. This was suggested to Steve Wilson by Robert Fripp. The new dynamics in volume/presence of instruments were produced by Wilson having individual tracks to work with. The end result gives the first 4 K.C. albums a more modern sounding production. The 30th anniversary editions are remastered. The 40th anniversary editions are re-mixes ..and there is quite a contrast between the 2. The original recordings NEVER gave these albums justice. When I hear the re-mixes..those instruments soar through me. It's as if they were disregarded in the analog and early digital age. Compare the 30th and 40th sometime. You won't believe the difference. After hearing the re-mix on the 40th..I never want to return to that lame sounding 30th anniversary edition again. The 40th anniversary editions cost more because the sound of the recordings were changed beyond any step taken ever, ever..before. This time the sound surpasses all attempts of the past. I have yet to hear Larks' and Starless and Bible Black. I hope to soon.
